To maximize your buildable area in Forge of Empires, unlock every available 4x4 expansion plot through the research tree, continent map provinces, and victory medals before advancing to the next era. Advanced ages dramatically increase the size of residential, military, and production structures, making perimeter land management essential for avoiding space bottlenecks.

Expansion Unlock Methods

Land expansions always enter your inventory as 4x4 tile squares. You can acquire them through four distinct channels:

Expansion TypeUnlock RequirementPlacement CostPriority and Limits
Research ExpansionsUnlock specific technology nodes using Forge Points and era goodsCoins (scale with era)High: Clear all available expansion nodes within your active era before tech-rushing ahead
Campaign Map ExpansionsScout and conquer or negotiate designated provinces on the Continent MapCoinsHigh: Acquire provinces ahead of your technological era to gain extra territory early
Victory ExpansionsEarn Medals via Great Building rewards, Guild Expeditions, and PvP arenasMedals (escalating cost per plot)Continuous: Reinvest medal surpluses into land whenever a tier threshold is met
Diamond ExpansionsDirect purchase with premium currencyDiamonds (cost increases per tier)Optional: Limited to two purchases per era

Managing Building Footprint Inflation

Early settlements rely on modest 2x2 and 3x3 footprints, such as Bronze Age chalets, potteries, and fruit farms. As you advance through the Progressive Era, Modern Era, and later ages, functional structures expand into 4x4, 5x5, and 6x4 plots, alongside massive Great Buildings such as The Arc or Alcatraz.

Failing to acquire expansions alongside technological progress forces you to delete essential production and support buildings. Furthermore, beginning in the Progressive Era, major buildings require 2x2 dual-lane roads connected to the Town Hall, consuming substantially more interior square footage than early single-lane dirt paths.

Layout Shaping and Road Efficiency

How you place your 4x4 plots determines whether your roads consume or preserve usable building space.

  • Build compact rectangles: Expand your borders outward into a uniform rectangle or square rather than extending narrow corridors along map edges. Protruding branches force long, redundant road extensions that waste tiles.
  • Center the Town Hall: Move your Town Hall toward the geometric center of your expanded grid. Central placement shortens the total length of road spines needed to reach outward districts.
  • Isolate road-free structures: Place Great Buildings, decorations, or event structures that do not require road connections along the outermost perimeter fence. This leaves accessible road frontage open for core production and residential units.

Era Advance Checklist

Before unlocking the breakthrough technology for a new era, confirm these four criteria:

  1. Research plots cleared: Every expansion node in your current era's Tech Tree is unlocked and placed on your grid.
  2. Continent map cleared: Provinces offering expansion rewards within your current fighting or negotiating reach are fully controlled.
  3. Medal reserves checked: Current medal stores are spent on any available Victory Expansions, or banked for the next price threshold.
  4. Road paths planned: Your core street corridors have enough clearance to transition into 2x2 dual-lane roads if entering the Progressive Era or beyond.
