To beat Level 45 in Gardenscapes, your objective is to uncover every hidden garden gnome buried under grass before your moves run out. Break through the central blockers immediately to create space, generate explosive power-ups, and trigger matches near the bottom of the board to cascade pieces through dense grass layers.
Opening Strategy: Clear the Center First
The starting board restricts piece movement with central blockers and thick grass patches, making large matches difficult on your initial turns. Expanding the playable area is your first priority.
- Target central blockers: Make your earliest matches directly adjacent to obstacles in the center column. Clearing this space accelerates the downward refill of pieces and opens up the grid.
- Make dual-purpose matches: Prioritize matches that damage grass or clear blockers while simultaneously shifting pieces into alignment elsewhere.
- Ignore isolated edges early: Avoid clearing single grass tiles along the top corners during the opening turns unless the match directly creates a power-up.
Gnome Mechanics and Shape Deduction
Gnomes do not hide under single tiles. They span multi-tile footprints, ranging from small two-tile figures to larger square statues.
Once a match clears enough grass to reveal a portion of a gnome, check its visible edges to determine its orientation and size:
- Identify the edge: Stop guessing randomly once a piece of stone peeks through the lawn.
- Follow the shape: Direct subsequent adjacent matches and power-up blasts strictly at the grass tiles directly covering the rest of the figurine.
- Abandon empty zones: Do not spend moves clearing thick grass in areas of the board where remaining gnomes cannot fit.
Crafting and Combining Power-Ups
Standard three-piece matches clear adjacent grass, but they are too slow to clear multi-layered lawns within the move limit. You must create explosives by matching four or more pieces.
| Power-Up | Matching Requirement | Tactical Role on Level 45 |
|---|---|---|
| Firecracker | 4 pieces in a line | Removes isolated grass tiles and targets single hidden gnome corners. |
| Bomb | 5 pieces in a T-shape or L-shape | Clears dense clusters of double-layer grass across a wide radius. |
| Dynamite | 6 pieces in a line | Sweeps large horizontal or vertical sections covering multiple gnome zones. |
| Rainbow Blast | Charged by detonating explosives | Clears every instance of one fruit type to trigger cascades and reveal grass. |
Whenever two power-ups land side by side, swap them together instead of activating them separately:
- Bomb + Bomb or Bomb + Firecracker: Creates a massive explosion that removes multiple layers of grass across a large portion of the board.
- Rainbow Blast + Explosive: Transforms all pieces of a matching fruit into active explosives across the board, rapidly stripping thick grass layers and uncovering statues in a single move.
Maximizing Cascades from the Bottom
Make your matches near the bottom of the board whenever no immediate power-up creation is available near the top. Lower matches force entire columns of fruit to drop down. This shifting movement creates automatic cascade matches, thins out bottom grass layers for free, and rapidly charges your Rainbow Blast meter without consuming extra turns.
End-Game Execution
When your move counter drops below ten:
- Check the objective counter: Look at the remaining gnome count to determine exactly how many statues are left.
- Target known locations only: Direct all remaining moves toward partially visible gnomes or dense grass patches large enough to conceal the remaining figures.
- Avoid unnecessary setups: If a single grass tile stands between you and the final gnome piece, use a direct adjacent match or a simple Firecracker rather than spending multiple turns attempting to build a larger combo.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Good guide for Gardenscapes players. The strategy part was useful.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
