To survive dense mid-game stages and the final wave in Gear Defenders, cluster your defenses around primary choke points, focus your gold on upgrading core towers rather than building spread-out units, and save long-cooldown hero abilities for the closing swarm.
Establishing Choke Points and Tower Clusters
Spreading turrets across the entire map dilutes your total damage output. Concentrate your firepower around tight map features so enemies must move through multiple overlapping lines of fire.
- Target Narrow Corridors and Corners: Place high-damage towers near corners or tight bends where pathing forces incoming enemies to group together. This maximizes single-shot efficiency and area-of-effect damage.
- Upgrade Core Towers First: Focus your currency on leveling up established turrets within the choke point instead of placing weak, low-level towers along secondary paths. Fully upgraded towers handle armored units and fast mobs far more effectively than unupgraded structures.
- Reposition When Needed: If an existing turret fails to keep up with enemy movement speeds or damage needs, invest in upgrading attack speed or specialized piercing attributes rather than trying to patch the area with cheap new towers.
Managing Cooldowns for the Final Wave
Spike difficulty usually peaks during the final wave when mob density increases and high-health units breach the perimeter. Reserving active hero abilities and special turret powers is critical for these final moments.
- Monitor the Wave Meter: Check the wave tracker to anticipate intensity spikes and avoid activating abilities prematurely.
- Hold Long Cooldowns: Do not spend major active skills on early, low-density waves unless your primary defensive line is actively collapsing.
- Focus Elite Targets: Trigger high-damage burst abilities directly on high-health elite units or dense clusters that threaten to break through your primary choke point.
Adjusting to Dynamic Enemy Pathing
If swarms begin bypassing your main kill zone during the final wave, adjust your defensive setup immediately:
- Maintain an Emergency Budget: Keep a small reserve of gold unused during the mid-game rather than spending all resources immediately.
- Build Safety Turrets: If enemies leak past your central cluster, use your reserve gold to build a secondary fallback turret further down the track to catch runners and buy extra time.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This helped me understand strategy much better.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
