HOYO-MiX built the regional sound of Liyue in Genshin Impact by combining traditional Chinese folk soloists with full Western orchestral arrangements. Led by composer Yu-Peng Chen, the production used traditional Chinese instruments to carry the melodic and emotional narrative, while the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra provided harmonic support, dynamic range, and cinematic scale.
Traditional Chinese Instruments and Their Roles
Rather than using synthetic instrument patches or treating folk instruments as background accents, HOYO-MiX recorded live solo masters in acoustic isolation. This captured nuanced playing techniques such as microtonal pitch bends, breath variation, and string slides.
Four primary folk instruments establish the musical identity across Liyue:
| Instrument | Acoustic Profile | In-Game Musical Role |
|---|---|---|
| Dizi (Bamboo Flute) | Agile, airy, and piercing tone | Leads pastoral melodies and open-world exploration themes |
| Guzheng (Plucked Zither) | Cascading glissandos with sharp resonance and rapid decay | Accompanies reflective scenery, high peaks, and settlement areas |
| Pipa (Chinese Lute) | Rapid tremolos and sharp, percussive plucks | Drives combat tension and lively urban marketplace themes |
| Erhu (Two-String Bowed) | Expressive, bowed vocal qualities with sliding pitches | Highlights emotional story moments, somber themes, and regional lore |
Orchestral Recording With the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra
The symphonic layers of the soundtrack were tracked live with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra inside Shanghai Symphony Hall. Recording in a dedicated performance space captured the hall's natural reverb and acoustic depth, avoiding a purely digital post-production mix.
The orchestral arrangements rely heavily on warm brass and rich string sections. These Western classical layers were scored to weave around the pentatonic structures played by the traditional soloists, creating an expansive backdrop for mountainous environments like Jueyun Karst and Mt. Tianheng.
Dynamic Transitions Between Exploration and Combat
Liyue’s music shifts dynamically to reflect time of day and player engagement:
- Day and Night Variations: Major locations such as Liyue Harbor use altered arrangements depending on the in-game clock. Daytime themes feature full instrumentation, whereas evening variations remove heavy brass and high woodwinds, leaving quiet guzheng and piano passages.
- Combat Escalation: Battle tracks, including "Rapid as Wildfires" and "Chasing the Torrents," increase tempo and introduce syncopated percussion. The pipa takes the lead with fast tremolos and aggressive rhythms, matching elemental combat while keeping the underlying pentatonic melodies intact.
- Environmental Boundaries: Melodic shifts signal regional borders. As players travel south from Mondstadt into Dihua Marsh, dizi and erhu phrases fade in, alerting the player to a cultural and environmental transition before reaching city landmarks.
