To survive Dragonspine in Genshin Impact, you must prevent the Sheer Cold meter from filling by anchoring your exploration route to active heat sources, carrying at least one Pyro character to ignite cold torches, and harvesting Scarlet Quartz to halt freezing damage.

How Sheer Cold Works

Sheer Cold appears as a light-blue gauge directly above your active character's health bar. It fills continuously while exploring the mountain. Once the gauge fills completely, your active character loses a rapid percentage of maximum HP every second until you reach warmth or fall in combat.

Two environmental conditions drastically speed up this accumulation:

  • Freezing water: Swimming causes the Sheer Cold gauge to fill at more than double its standard speed. Avoid deep water, as characters can easily succumb before reaching the opposite shore.
  • Snowstorms: Passing through blizzards sharply accelerates meter buildup, leaving less time between safe zones.

Treat movement across Dragonspine as a sequence of short runs between reliable warmth anchors rather than open wandering.

Heat Sources and Safe Zones

Standing within the aura of an active heat source rapidly empties the Sheer Cold gauge. Before engaging enemies or moving to a new landmark, secure the nearest heat source as a fallback position.

Heat SourceActivation RequirementFunction and Limits
Campfires & TorchesLight with any Pyro attackCommon along roads; can be extinguished by Cryo attacks, Hydro, or strong Anemo gusts.
Ruin BraziersProximity / interact promptEmits permanent warmth once activated; immune to elemental extinguishing.
Teleport Waypoints & StatuesUnlock interact promptPermanent safe zones; completely resets Sheer Cold when standing at the base.
Warming SeeliesFollow along flight pathProvides mobile heat while floating, then creates a permanent heat pillar at its Seelie Court.
Scarlet QuartzShatter and collect shardGrants a temporary buff that halts Sheer Cold buildup and allows breaking ancient ice.

Always light torches and campfires as soon as you spot them. Having a nearby heat source ready prevents you from freezing mid-fight if an encounter takes longer than anticipated.

Breaking Ancient Ice with Scarlet Quartz

Dragonspine contains specialized "ancient ice" covering regional mechanisms, sealed chests, and the mountain's locked Statue of The Seven. Standard Pyro attacks cannot melt this ice.

  1. Locate a glowing red Scarlet Quartz node near the obstruction.
  2. Break the mineral node with basic attacks and pick up the red shard.
  3. Observe the crimson aura circling your character; while active, Sheer Cold accumulation pauses.
  4. Run directly to the ancient ice formation and strike it once to shatter the barrier.

The Scarlet Quartz buff expires upon landing a hit on any target. Do not attack roaming wildlife or minor enemies along the path, or you will consume the charge before reaching the ice.

Team Setup and Exploration Precautions

Entering the mountain with an ill-fitted team significantly raises the risk of party wipes. Adjust your party lineup before leaving the base camp:

  • Bring a dependable Pyro character: Amber is ideal for early exploration because her charged bow shots ignite distant torches across chasms without stamina costs or skill cooldowns. Bennett is also effective, providing quick Pyro skill taps and burst healing.
  • Be cautious with self-inflicted elements: Barbara's elemental skill applies the Wet status to the active character. Because Dragonspine is filled with Cryo Abyss Mages, Cryo Hilichurl Grenadiers, and Frostarm Lawachurls, using Barbara can leave your character repeatedly frozen. Use Noelle instead to gain shields and emergency healing without applying moisture to yourself.
  • Follow marked mountain trails: Scaling sheer rock faces drains stamina while offering no heat sources, leaving climbers stranded on cliffs as their health rapidly drains. Follow the dirt paths marked by lanterns and waypoints to maintain safe access to warmth.
  • Lure enemies away from frozen water: Ground-slam attacks from large enemies like Frostarm Lawachurls break thin ice sheets. Fight on solid ground near a brazier so you do not drop into freezing water during combat.
