To survive early encounters in Gothic Classic, you must engage the lock-on button before swinging, press your action button in combination with directional movement keys, and time follow-up inputs precisely as your weapon strikes the target. Button spamming will leave you open to counter-attacks and cause strikes to miss.

How to Lock On and Control Movement

Locking onto an enemy alters how your character moves and keeps your attacks focused on a single target.

  • Engage the Lock: Press and hold the target lock button to lock your gaze onto the nearest opponent.
  • Strafing and Backpedaling: While locked on, your forward movement changes to strafing left, strafing right, or stepping backward. Use this modified movement to maintain ideal spacing rather than running straight past the target.
  • Tracking Visual Cues: Staying locked on allows you to watch enemy wind-up animations closely so you can dodge or block at the correct moment.

Without an active target lock, your attacks lack focus, making it difficult to hit fast or mobile beasts in open terrain.

How to Execute Directional Attacks and Combos

Attacks in Gothic Classic require combining the action button with a direction. Pressing the action button alone or rapidly clicking will not initiate a reliable attack sequence.

Input CombinationActionBest Usage
Action + ForwardForward StrikeStandard frontal swing; timing follow-ups creates hit-stagger chains.
Action + Left / RightDirectional SwingSweeping attack; alters rhythm and hits enemies attempting to flank.
Backpedal (Locked On)Step Backward / DodgeRetreats out of hitboxes during an enemy's active attack animation.

To chain attacks into a stagger combo, execute your next directional input at the exact frame your weapon makes contact with the enemy. If your swing is blocked or timed incorrectly, stop your combo immediately and retreat, as missing your rhythm leaves you vulnerable to a retaliation hit. Practice attack timing on weak creatures like Scavengers before attempting combat against human NPCs who can actively block your swings.

Managing Animation Openings and Multiple Enemies

Combat relies on strict animation windows rather than stamina bars. Every swing has a fixed duration during which you cannot defend yourself.

  1. Wait for Whiffs: Stand outside the enemy's attack range and wait for their wind-up animation to complete. Strike during the brief recovery window after their attack misses.
  2. Handle One Target at a Time: The lock-on mechanic can only focus on one target at a time. If facing a group, manually shift your focus or back away to keep every enemy in front of you.
  3. Use Bottlenecks: Retreat into narrow pathways or environmental choke points. Funneling enemies into a single file line prevents them from flanking you and eliminates the danger of off-screen attacks.
