Gothic Classic Console Controls and Interaction Guide

To interact with items, loot containers, or NPCs in Gothic Classic, bring your character to a complete stop directly in front of your target. Hold the interaction button while pushing your directional input forward or toward the object.

Performing Object Interactions

Gothic Classic uses a stationary "stop-and-act" interaction method rather than fluid, automated triggers. If you press interaction inputs while moving or running, the game ignores the command entirely.

To interact with environmental objects, switches, or loot containers:

1. Stop moving completely and face the target directly.
2. Hold down the interaction button.
3. Push your directional input forward toward the object to execute the action.

Items scattered on shelves or tables do not glow automatically. If an interaction prompt does not appear, shift your character's position slightly to re-align. If a container remains locked after trying to open it, look nearby for a key or search for an NPC who holds the key to open it.

Target Locking and NPC Dialogue Navigation

Using lock-on mechanics ensures you target the correct character or object in crowded areas, preventing unintended actions.

Target Locking Mechanics

• Target Activation: Press the lock-on shoulder trigger while facing an NPC or object to target them directly.
• Strafing Movement: While locked on, your character shifts into a strafing movement pattern. Use this to maintain distance around potentially hostile characters.
• Target Verification: If no interaction prompt appears while locked onto an NPC, that character is unavailable for conversation or lacks interactable dialogue.

NPC Dialogue Execution

• Exhaust Dialogue Trees: Speak with every named NPC when entering a camp and select all available dialogue choices to trigger essential quest lines.
• Confirm Selections: Read every prompt carefully before committing. Select paths mindfully, as dialogue choices can permanently alter camp reputations or block specific opportunities.
• Track Details Immediately: NPCs rarely repeat critical information once you exit a conversation, so note key instructions when they are first delivered.
