To pilot the Astral Automaton build in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, stay on Tavern Tier 2 to collect copies, select summon-generating Trinkets on Turn 6 and Turn 9, and deliberately run a six-minion board so start-of-combat effects have room to trigger.
Astral Automaton is a Tier 2 Mech that gains permanent stats whenever an Astral Automaton is summoned, regardless of whether that copy appears in the shop, in your hand, or directly during combat. Summon trinkets accelerate this scaling engine by generating additional copies every round without requiring extra gold.
Trinket Priority and Selection
Your Trinket choices on Turn 6 and Turn 9 determine whether the build can generate enough combat summons to outscale late-game lobbies.
| Trinket | Offering Turn | Primary Function | Strategic Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automaton Portrait (Lesser) | Turn 6 | Adds an Astral Automaton to your hand and summons one at combat start | Must keep one empty board slot before combat begins |
| Chess Set (Greater) | Turn 9 | Copies your leftmost minion at the start of combat | Place your strongest, untaunted Automaton on the far left |
| Automaton Portrait (Greater) | Turn 9 | Summons multiple Automatons at combat start | Demands open board space to allow every spawn to trigger |
| Bronze Watch | Turn 9 | Sets minion stats to the combat baseline | Secondary tempo pick when summon trinkets are not offered |
Automaton Portrait on Turn 6 is the primary signal to commit to the archetype. On Turn 9, Chess Set and Greater Automaton Portrait offer the highest scaling multiplier by duplicating your largest Mech or generating multiple scaling procs per round.
Tavern Tier Curve and Rolling Strategy
Do not fast-level when building around Astral Automaton. Because Astral Automaton is a Tier 2 minion, advancing your tavern too early adds higher-tier minions to the pool and reduces your roll efficiency.
- Turns 1 to 3: Play standard curves, buying pairs or token minions to preserve Health.
- Turns 4 to 5: Stay on Tavern Tier 2. Buy every Astral Automaton offered and hold pairs on your bench.
- Turn 6: Select your Lesser Trinket. Prioritize Automaton Portrait.
- Turns 7 to 8: Spend your gold rolling on Tavern Tier 2. Combine your Automatons into Golden copies to consolidate board space while keeping overall stats.
- Turn 9: Select your Greater Trinket (Chess Set or Greater Automaton Portrait), then upgrade your tavern to Tier 3 or Tier 4.
- Turn 10 and beyond: Search Tier 4 for Magnetic Mechs to protect your scaled bodies.
Tripling Automatons is required to maintain board capacity. Because start-of-combat trinkets need open space to deploy, condensing three base Automatons into a single Golden unit frees a board space without resetting the global stat counter.
Board Positioning and Open Slot Management
Start-of-combat summon Trinkets require an available board space. If you field seven minions into combat without an effect that removes one, start-of-combat summons from Automaton Portrait or Chess Set will fail to trigger, forfeiting both an extra body and the global stat buff for that combat.
To ensure triggers resolve:
- Field six minions: Keep an open board slot going into combat so the Trinket can spawn the seventh minion immediately.
- Leftmost placement: When using Chess Set, position your largest Automaton on the far left so it gets duplicated. Do not give this specific minion Taunt, ensuring it survives to attack.
- Right-side defense: Place your Taunt and utility units on the right side of the board to absorb early hits away from your primary damage dealers.
Late-Game Magnetic Utility
Raw attack and health leave your warband vulnerable to high-damage trades and Venomous units. Once your core copies are golden and you reach Tavern Tier 4, use Magnetic Mechs to reinforce them:
- Divine Shield: Magnetize Annoy-o-Module to your primary Automatons to absorb hits and survive initial trades.
- Reborn and Spawns: Attach Replicating Menace or Reborn enhancements to keep units on the board against opposing cleave damage.
- Selective Taunt: Apply Taunt exclusively to secondary or disposable Mechs to preserve your leftmost Chess Set target.
