In Hearthstone Battlegrounds, the combat stat retention bug occurs when temporary combat enchantments fail to clear during the transition back to Bob’s Tavern, converting temporary combat multipliers into permanent base attack and health. To execute this interaction, place combat-triggering minions on the far left to attack first, seat your scaling carry and enchantment anchor adjacent to each other toward the right, and redirect Tavern gold away from minor stat spells into protective utility pieces.

How the Stat Retention Interaction Works

Under normal Battlegrounds rules, the game engine wipes temporary attack buffs, start-of-combat triggers, and aura multipliers during the cleanup phase between combat resolution and the Tavern shopping phase.

The stat retention bug occurs when the cleanup step fails to strip temporary enchantment layers before returning to the Tavern. When temporary bonuses interact with specific deathrattles, resummons, or stat-locking triggers, the engine bakes those combat-only multipliers directly into the minion's base profile.

Because base stats are permanently overwritten, subsequent combat rounds multiply the newly inflated numbers rather than the original card values. A minion receiving additive multipliers can compound its stats from double digits into thousands over two or three combat rounds. However, recalculating a minion in the Tavern phase without its active combat tags will clear the accumulated stats and reset the card to baseline.

Board Positioning and Attack Order

Executing this scaling loop requires strict attack sequencing. If your primary carry attacks early and dies before receiving combat buffs, the duplication interaction fails for that round.

Board PositionRoleBoard FunctionExecution Error to Avoid
Slot 1–2Early Triggers / Taunt BreakersAttack first to trigger combat deathrattles and stat aurasPlacing the carry here, causing it to die before receiving buffs
Slot 3–4Enchantment AnchorLocks temporary combat enchantments into permanent base valuesPlacing it away from the carry, breaking adjacency conditions
Slot 5–6Primary Scaling CarryAbsorbs stacked combat buffs to retain them across combat roundsGiving it Taunt without Divine Shield, exposing it to early poison
Slot 7Backline Utility / ProtectionAbsorbs cleave damage and triggers late-round deathrattlesSpawning backline tokens that consume board space needed for resummons

To stabilize the sequence:

  1. Place sacrificial units or fast attackers in slots 1 and 2 to crack enemy Taunts and activate combat-start deathrattles.
  2. Seat the enchantment anchor and the scaling carry adjacent to each other in slots 3 through 6.
  3. Keep the carry shielded behind Taunt minions to prevent it from trading before combat multipliers trigger.

Tavern Phase Spending Priorities

Once the engine begins scaling, spending gold on standard +2/+2 Tavern spells or minor stat Battlecries provides negligible value. Allocate your gold toward combat utility and board space management:

  • Prioritize Protective Keywords: Purchase Divine Shield providers, Windfury enablers, and targeted Taunts to direct enemy attacks away from your core pieces.
  • Manage Board Space: Avoid purchasing deathrattle token spawners that flood your board. If your board fills to seven units before combat resummons occur, the stat-locking sequence fails.
  • Maintain Transition Pieces: Hold strong standalone neutral units and high-tier utility cards in hand to preserve a backup plan if balance hotfixes disable the interaction.

Counters and Failure Points

Large numerical stats remain vulnerable to endgame tech units that bypass raw health totals:

  • Venomous and Poisonous: Any poison or venomous hit destroys high-health carries instantly. Lead with low-value Divine Shield minions or tokens to absorb opening poison attacks.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Leeroy automatically destroys the minion that kills it. Avoid positioning your primary carry where it will hit an obvious enemy Leeroy.
  • Transmuted Bramblewitch: Attacking into Transmuted Bramblewitch permanently reduces the attacking minion's stats to 3/3 for the remainder of that combat round.
  • Cleave Collateral: Ensure your Taunt minions are positioned far away from your enchantment anchor so adjacent cleave damage does not remove your engine before it activates.
