To run a Battlecry value engine in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, buy Brann Bronzebeard on Tavern Tier 5 and keep at least one open board slot to cycle temporary Battlecry minions. Brann doubles every Battlecry trigger, cutting the effective cost of resource-generating units and doubling stat buffs across your permanent warband.
Prerequisites to Pivot
Do not buy Brann Bronzebeard if your board cannot survive an immediate combat round. Brann provides no combat keywords and low base stats on the turn you recruit him.
Initiate the pivot only under the following conditions:
- Health Pool: You have at least 15 to 20 Health remaining to absorb potential damage while setting up.
- Board Stability: Your current warband is strong enough to win or tie against an average opponent without an immediate combat upgrade.
- Gold Availability: You have enough gold remaining to buy at least one economy-generating or card-discovering Battlecry unit in the same turn.
Board Space Management
A Battlecry engine stalls if all seven board slots are locked with permanent minions. Manage your board layout to cycle units freely:
- Keep Five Combat Units: Dedicate five slots to your primary combat minions carrying Divine Shields, cleave effects, or high base stats.
- Anchor Brann in Slot Six: Keep Brann Bronzebeard on the board to maintain doubled triggers.
- Leave Slot Seven Open: Use the final slot exclusively to summon a Battlecry minion, resolve its doubled trigger, and sell it immediately.
- Open a Second Slot for Pairs: If you hold multiple pairs or roll surplus gold, temporarily sell your weakest combat minion to hold discovered cards and combine triples.
High-Priority Cycling Minions
Minions that refund gold or discover new cards reduce the net cost of each cycle. With Brann active, these cards generate extra resources to sustain longer recruitment turns.
| Minion | Role | Engine Value with Brann |
|---|---|---|
| Shell Collector | Economy refund | Generates two Tavern Coins, lowering its net purchase cost to 1 gold after selling. |
| Primalfin Lookout | Minion discovery | Discovers two Murlocs, creating opportunities to find additional Battlecry or buff units. |
| Tavern Tempest | Resource generation | Adds two random Elementals to your hand to cycle or sell for additional gold. |
| General Drakkisath | Economy and board buff | Adds two Smolderwing cards to hand, supplying both direct buffs and extra sell value. |
Scaling Payoffs and Tribal Synergies
After establishing your cycle, invest in Tier 6 units and neutral buffers to convert card plays into combat stats:
- Dragons: Kalecgos grants permanent board-wide buffs whenever you trigger a Battlecry.
- Murlocs: Murky and King Bagurgle provide rapid stat growth across friendly Murlocs.
- Menagerie: If running mixed minion types, use Strongshell Scavenger on Taunt minions or Menagerie Jug to distribute buffs across multiple tribes.
Late-Game Positioning and Scam Counters
Pure stat scaling remains vulnerable to Venomous, Poisonous, and Leeroy Jenkins effects in final rounds. Protect your buffed units with these positioning adjustments:
- Lead with Shields or Taunts: Position low-value Divine Shield or Taunt minions in the first two attack slots to absorb Venomous hits before your main carries strike.
- Stagger Main Carries: Place your highest-stat minions in the third or fourth position so they attack after the opponent's initial defensive shields are broken.
- Sell Brann for Tech: In the final round, sell Brann Bronzebeard if additional stat buffs are no longer needed. Replace him with a combat tech minion, such as Leeroy Jenkins, Transmuted Bramblefin, or a Divine Shield unit, to remove an opponent's largest threat.
