To play the Land Lubber strategy in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, stay on Tavern Tier 2 instead of leveling normally, buy multiple copies of Land Lubber, and continuously purchase low-tier economy spells until you accumulate enough gold to jump straight to the late game.

This build relies on Land Lubber's passive ability: at the end of your turn, the Tavern offers an extra Tavern Spell. Because the spell pool is restricted by your current Tavern Tier, staying on Tier 2 forces the shop to offer only Tier 1 and Tier 2 spells. This guarantees access to cheap resource generators such as Strike Oil, allowing you to build an expanding gold economy that eventually funds a direct pivot to Tier 5 or Tier 6.

Lobby Requirements and Hero Selection

This strategy is not universally applicable. Because Land Lubber is a dual-type Elemental and Pirate minion, the active tribe pool directly controls your odds of finding your core engine.

ConditionRequirementImpact on Strategy
Elementals & PiratesRequiredBoth tribes must be active in the lobby to maximize the roll rate of Land Lubber and tribe-specific economy spells.
High-Armor or Economy HeroesRecommendedHeroes such as Trade Prince Gallywix, Millhouse Manastorm, and Master Nguyen absorb early health losses and fund extra rerolls.
Undead or Beast LobbiesCautionToken-heavy lobbies deal sustained early chip damage that can eliminate you before your economy comes online.

If either Elementals or Pirates are banned, roll odds for Land Lubber drop significantly, and key tribal synergies such as Chef's Choice become unreliable. In those lobbies, play a standard leveling curve instead.

How to Execute the Tier 2 Economy Loop

Once you confirm the lobby is eligible, stop upgrading your tavern at Tier 2 and focus your gold on rolling for your core engine:

  1. Recruit Land Lubbers: Acquire two or three copies of Land Lubber as quickly as possible. Each copy adds an additional Tavern Spell to every shop refresh.
  2. Buy Low-Cost Economy Spells: Purchase every spell that increases maximum gold, offers immediate gold refunds, or provides free rerolls.
  3. Pick Up Patient Scout: Place Patient Scout on your board early. Because you remain on Tier 2 for several turns, the Scout continues to upgrade automatically each round, banking a high-tier discover reward at zero tavern-upgrade cost.
  4. Manage Triples Carefully: Combine Land Lubbers into a Golden Land Lubber to free up board space while retaining spell generation. Hold the resulting Triple Reward discovery card in hand rather than playing it immediately on Tier 2.
  5. Stabilize Hero Health: Land Lubbers have low base stats. If your hero health falls toward the 15 to 20 range, pause economy purchases to cast cheap combat buff spells directly onto your Golden Lubber or a Taunt minion. Keep at least one or two board slots open to cycle utility units.

The Transition: Pivoting to the End Game

Do not attempt to finish the match on Tier 2. The purpose of stacking Lubbers is to bypass the mid-game entirely once your resource generation breaks normal gold limits.

Execute your transition when you hit a maximum gold pool of 20 or more, or when your hand holds ready Triple Rewards alongside a fully leveled Patient Scout:

  1. Spend Accumulated Gold on Upgrades: In a single turn, upgrade your Tavern repeatedly from Tier 2 straight to Tier 5 or Tier 6.
  2. Cash In Saved Discoveries: Play your saved Triple Reward cards and sell your Patient Scout to discover high-tier anchor minions, such as Tier 6 build-enablers, heavy cleave threats, or scam units.
  3. Sell Land Lubbers for Board Space: Replace your Land Lubbers one by one with the high-tier units you discover, converting your banked economy into an immediate late-game combat board.
