To run the Leapfrogger strategy in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, you must sacrifice an early Leapfrogger, duplicate its Deathrattles with Monstrous Macaw, and multiply those triggers across Beast tokens using Titus Rivendare.
The build succeeds or fails based on attack sequence: your Leapfrogger must die immediately on the opening clash, Monstrous Macaw must attack second to spread accumulated buffs, and Titus Rivendare must stay alive on the far right of your board.
Optimal Board Positioning and Attack Order
Place your minions in a strict left-to-right order to ensure Deathrattle buffs multiply before your backline units take damage.
| Slot | Minion Role | Recommended Minion | Key Keywords |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slot 1 | Primary Initiator | Leapfrogger | Taunt, Reborn |
| Slot 2 | Deathrattle Duplicator | Monstrous Macaw | Reborn, Windfury |
| Slot 3 | Secondary Duplicator | Monstrous Macaw or Leapfrogger | Reborn |
| Slot 4 | Primary Token Spawner | Manasaber | Taunt, Reborn |
| Slot 5 | Secondary Token Spawner | Sewer Rat or Manasaber | Taunt |
| Slot 6 | Cleave Buffer | Utility minion (non-Beast) | Divine Shield |
| Slot 7 | Multiplier Engine | Titus Rivendare | Untaunted, Stealth |
Taunt on your Slot 1 Leapfrogger guarantees that the enemy attacks it first, distributing the baseline +1/+1 buff (or +2/+2 if Golden) and passing the Leapfrogger Deathrattle to surviving friendly Beasts. Placing Monstrous Macaw in Slot 2 ensures your first attack triggers those distributed Deathrattles immediately, spreading additional copies across the board before enemy hits can eliminate unbuffed pieces.
Managing Tokens and Board Space
Leapfrogger Deathrattles only pass to friendly Beasts. To prevent wasted enchantments, your board must generate fresh Beast tokens as older units die. If your board fills entirely with static, non-spawning Beasts, Deathrattles consolidate onto surviving bodies until they run out of targets.
- Prioritize Taunted Beast spawners: Manasaber is the ideal token engine because its Deathrattle summons two 0/1 Cublings with Taunt. These Taunt tokens force enemy minions to attack them, catching leaping buffs and shielding your support units.
- Maintain open board space: Avoid summoning excessive non-Beast Deathrattle units like Ghastcoiler. Minions without the Beast tag cannot receive Leapfrogger enchantments and clog board space needed for Cublings and Rats.
Protecting Titus Rivendare
Titus Rivendare adds an extra trigger to every friendly Deathrattle (two extra triggers if Golden). Because your combat scaling relies entirely on this multiplier, opponents will use targeted tech cards to remove him early.
- Prevent Cleave damage: Opponents running Cave Hydra or Foe Reaper 4000 can eliminate an adjacent Titus when targeting your token spawners. Place a high-health or Divine Shield minion in Slot 6 without Taunt to absorb Cleave hits directed at Slot 5.
- Defend against Zapp Slywick: Zapp targets your two lowest-attack minions. Use Tavern Spells or permanent tavern buffs to raise Titus above the attack values of your other utility units.
- Apply defensive keywords: Use Trinkets or Tavern Spells to give Titus Stealth or Divine Shield, preventing him from dying to random early attacks. Never give Titus Taunt.
Mid-Game Assembly and Pivot Rules
Do not commit fully to a pure Leapfrogger end-game board until you secure the required pieces. While Leapfrogger is available on Tavern Tier 2, the build cannot scale into the late game without Monstrous Macaw (Tier 3) and Titus Rivendare (Tier 5).
Hold Leapfrogger pairs and Beast tokens on your bench or run them alongside standard tempo boards. Once you reach Tier 4 or discover into Tier 5, search for Titus Rivendare. If you reach the late game without finding Titus, sell the Leapfroggers and pivot to an alternative Beast or high-stat composition. Unmultiplied Leapfrogger Deathrattles scale linearly and will lose to late-game Quillboar, Demon, or Dragon boards.
