To play C'Thun successfully in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, activate your Hero Power on Turn 2 and every subsequent turn without exception. C'Thun's Hero Power costs two gold and grants a friendly minion +1/+1 at the end of your turn, repeating for each turn that has passed. Skipping an activation forfeits permanent scaling that cannot be recovered.
C'Thun Early-Game Turn Curve
Standard tavern leveling curves fail with C'Thun because upgrading to Tier 2 on Turn 2 consumes all four gold, locking out your Hero Power. Follow this dedicated gold curve through Turn 6 to guarantee Hero Power activations while keeping pace with the lobby.
| Turn (Gold) | Primary Actions | Tactical Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Turn 1 (3 Gold) | Buy the best minion; prioritize token or economy units | Secure early board presence |
| Turn 2 (4 Gold) | Hero Power (2g) + Roll or Freeze (or sell a token, Buy for 3g, and Hero Power) | Start Hero Power scaling immediately |
| Turn 3 (5 Gold) | Buy a minion (3g) + Hero Power (2g) | Add a second permanent target for buffs |
| Turn 4 (6 Gold) | Upgrade Tavern to Tier 2 (2g) + Hero Power (2g) + Roll or float 2g | Level cheaply without skipping your Hero Power |
| Turn 5 (7 Gold) | Buy two minions (6g) or Buy (3g) + Upgrade to Tier 3 (3g with banked economy) + Hero Power (2g) | Fill open board slots to catch all stat triggers |
| Turn 6 (8 Gold) | Buy a minion (3g) + Upgrade to Tier 3 (3g) + Hero Power (2g) | Stabilize Tavern tiering and lock in mid-game stats |
Economy minions on Turn 1—such as Alleycat, Sellemental, or Swabbing minions—provide generated tokens or sell-back gold. Save these resources in hand to smooth out Turn 4 or Turn 5, allowing you to advance your Tavern Tier without skipping an activation.
Minions to Target for C'Thun Buffs
Because C'Thun's Hero Power distributes buffs randomly across your board, plain minions without keywords waste stat growth. Focus your purchases on units that offer combat multipliers:
- Divine Shield: Shields effectively double the health gained from C'Thun. Priority pickups include Pupbot, Annoy-o-Tron, Deflect-o-Bot, and Bronze Warden. Bronze Warden is especially resilient because its Reborn mechanic restores the Divine Shield.
- Cleave and Windfury: High attack on multi-target units rapidly clears opposing boards. Target Cave Hydra and Foe Reaper 4000 to apply C'Thun’s flat attack buffs across multiple enemy units per swing. Windfury minions provide similar leverage by striking twice before taking return damage.
- End-of-Turn Engines: Drakkari Enchanter triggers your Hero Power a second time at the end of the turn. On Turn 10, an activation normally grants 11 individual +1/+1 buffs; with Drakkari Enchanter present, your board receives 22 separate +1/+1 buffs for the same two-gold cost.
Late-Game Board Pruning and Adjustments
As the match progresses past Turn 8, weak minions from the opening rounds dilute the distribution of your buffs.
- Prune filler units: Sell naked Tier 1 minions that lack Divine Shield, Cleave, or Venomous utility. Reducing your board to five or six high-impact minions ensures your end-of-turn stats land exclusively on key threats.
- Clear temporary purchases before ending the turn: Never leave disposable Battlecry minions on your board when you hit the End Turn button. If a minion is not part of your combat lineup, sell it before clicking your Hero Power.
- Tech against scam compositions: Large raw stats are vulnerable to Poisonous, Venomous, and Leeroy the Reckless. Incorporate utility pieces like Tunnel Blaster or Divine Shield Taunt units to absorb instant-kill effects and shield your primary cleave threats.
- Do not stagnate on Tier 3: Once your mid-game board is stable and your Hero Power delivers substantial stats each round, spend floating gold on Turns 7 and 8 to push toward higher Tavern Tiers for endgame tech pieces.
