To summon two 2/4 Taunt Guards instead of one from Barricade in Hearthstone, you must have at least one point of Armor before the spell resolves. Without Armor, casting the four-mana spell summons only a single 2/4 Guard with Taunt, resulting in a severe tempo loss.
If an opponent chips your Armor down to zero before your turn, Barricade will fail its condition. To guarantee the extra minion, hold the spell until you can generate Armor on the exact same turn or preserve Armor from prior turns when facing decks that lack immediate reach.
Mana Curves and Turn Sequences
Because opposing boards and direct-damage spells can easily strip your Armor pool before Turn 4, plan your mana spending based on whether your Armor is secure or needs to be generated in a single turn.
| Turn Timing | Total Mana | Required Play Sequence | Tactical Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn 3 (With Coin) | 4 (Coin + 3 Mana) | Hero Power on Turn 2, Coin into Barricade on Turn 3 | Deploys twin Taunts a turn early if Turn 2 Armor survives |
| Turn 4 (On Curve) | 4 Mana | Turn 1 Armor Vendor or Turn 2 Armor Up | Standard curve play against opponents without early board chip |
| Turn 5 (One-Turn Combo) | 5 Mana | Armor Vendor (1 mana) + Barricade (4 mana) | Guarantees the trigger from hand regardless of board state |
| Turn 6 (Hero Power Combo) | 6 Mana | Armor Up Hero Power (2 mana) + Barricade (4 mana) | Self-contained activation that requires no combo cards |
| Turn 7 (Cycle & Guard) | 7 Mana | Shield Block (3 mana) + Barricade (4 mana) | Generates 5 Armor, draws a card, and creates twin Taunts |
When holding The Coin, avoid spending it on small minions unless you must contest an immediate 1-drop threat. Saving The Coin lets you accelerate into Barricade on Turn 3 if your Turn 2 Armor Up remains intact. If the opponent deals persistent face damage that consistently strips your Armor, hold Barricade until Turn 5 or Turn 6 to guarantee the trigger in one action.
Setting Up Removal and Sweepers
A resolved pair of 2/4 Guards provides eight total Health across two targets. In addition to stopping weapon attacks and charge damage from reaching your hero, this stat line softens opposing boards for Warrior sweepers:
- Minefield: Minions that attack into a 2/4 Guard drop their Health low enough for Minefield to wipe remaining targets without wasting damage bounces.
- Brawl: Two Taunt bodies absorb hits to ensure you survive long enough to cast a Turn 5 Brawl.
- Bladestorm: Uneven trades into 4-Health minions create staggered health totals across the opposing board, allowing Bladestorm to clear continuously.
- Sword Eater Follow-ups: Absorbing counterattacks behind Guards lets you swing equipped weapons directly into remaining enemy minions without sacrificing hero Health.
Managing Armor: Barricade vs. Shield Slam
Armor functions as both an enabler for Barricade and damage fuel for Shield Slam. Managing this pool depends on the size of the enemy threats:
- Against wide, low-attack boards: Cast Barricade first while you still have Armor. Spending all your Armor on Shield Slam before casting Barricade prevents the second Guard from summoning, whereas damage taken by Guards afterward preserves your baseline health.
- Against a single large threat: Spend high Armor on Shield Slam immediately. Removing an 8/8 minion outright prevents far more incoming damage than attempting to block it with 2/4 Guards that can be traded through or removed with targeted spells.
