In Hearthstone Standard format, Egg Warlock controls board-focused matches by dropping sticky Deathrattle minions early, using targeted removal like Drain Soul to sustain your life total, and resetting wide enemy boards with the Colossal minion Gigafin.

To win consistently on ladder, focus on surviving the opening turns without taking unforced self-damage, baiting your opponent into committing heavy hand resources, and timing your board swings.

Mulligan Strategy and Opening Turns

Your opening priorities depend entirely on opposing deck speed. Fast aggressive decks punish reckless Life Tapping, while slower decks give you room to gather resources.

  • High-Priority Keeps: Keep your cheapest Deathrattle eggs and low-cost draw cards in your opening hand. Playing an egg on turn one or two establishes early board presence that opponents struggle to trade into cleanly.
  • Defensive Removal: Keep Drain Soul against aggressive opponents. It eliminates early enemy attackers while immediately restoring 3 Health to counter early chip damage.
  • Life Tap Discipline: Do not tap aggressively on turns two and three against fast decks with direct burn damage. Save your Health until your mid-game defensive tools come online. Against slow control or combo lists, tap freely on turn two to expand your tactical options.

Turn-by-Turn Game Plan

Managing your curve requires softening enemy waves rather than rushing to clear every minion immediately.

Turn PhasePrimary ObjectiveTactical Action
Turns 1–3Establish sticky board presencePlay early Deathrattle eggs; hold zero-cost removal for immediate threats.
Turns 4–5Trade minions and recover HealthTrigger eggs into Taunt or Rush minions; cast Drain Soul to remove threats and heal.
Turns 6–7Bait opponent overextensionAbsorb manageable hits and withhold mass removal until the opponent commits heavily from hand.
Turn 8+Reset board with GigafinDeploy Gigafin to swallow the opposing board, then isolate or protect Gigafin's Maw.

When opponents refuse to attack your eggs, use cheap direct damage or sacrifice cards to pop the Deathrattles yourself. This maintains board initiative and keeps high-value enemy targets contested.

Gigafin Sequencing and Mechanics

Gigafin acts as the main late-game reset button in the deck. Playing it correctly requires managing both the main Colossal body and Gigafin's Maw:

  1. Wait for Overextension: Do not play Gigafin onto an empty or low-threat board for simple tempo. Hold it until the opponent commits significant mana or hand resources to a wide board state.
  2. The Devour Battlecry: Deploying Gigafin summons Gigafin's Maw and devours all enemy minions directly into the Maw.
  3. Maw Resolution: If the opponent kills Gigafin's Maw, their minions return to the board, though they lose their original enchantments, buffs, and Charge. If you protect the Maw behind Taunts, or trigger its removal yourself before the opponent can safely reclaim their cards, the swallowed minions are permanently eliminated from the game.

Matchup Adjustments

  • Against Board Aggro: Play defensively. Force trades into your eggs, preserve your life total with Drain Soul, and use Gigafin to wipe out their final mid-game wave.
  • Against Combo: Switch from defense to active pressure. Pop your eggs immediately with your own sacrifice tools and direct minion damage to the opponent's face to threaten lethal damage before their combo resolves.
  • Against Control: Pace your threats. Do not drop multiple eggs alongside Gigafin into potential mass silences or full-board clears. Force control opponents to spend single-target removal on individual threats one turn at a time.
