To progress Construction efficiently in IdleOn - Idle RPG, station your characters in the center of the cog board and surround them with directional Construction EXP cogs rather than flat Build Rate cogs. Character level growth permanently scales your base Build Rate, quickly outpacing the static numbers provided by flat cogs. Pair this setup with disciplined Salt Refinery management and targeted building unlocks to keep your materials flowing without bottlenecking your account.
Directional EXP Cogs vs. Flat Build Rate
Flat Build Rate cogs offer immediate output, but your account's long-term construction speed relies on your characters' individual Construction levels. Directional EXP cogs provide percentage-based experience multipliers that point toward adjacent tiles, dramatically accelerating hourly character level gains.
When crafting and sorting cogs at the cog table, prioritize:
- Directional arrows granting bonus Construction EXP% to adjacent tiles.
- Multi-directional cogs that point toward two or more adjacent character slots.
- High percentage personal EXP boosts on characters placed in central tiles.
Scrap flat Build Rate cogs whenever directional alternatives become available. As you produce higher cog tiers, replace low-yield or outward-facing cogs with stronger percentage boosters. Concentrate multiple overlapping directional arrows onto your primary builders to maximize their experience gain.
Cog Board Layout and Flag Placement
Board efficiency depends on clustering characters where they can receive the maximum number of directional bonuses. Placing characters on the outer edges reduces the number of adjacent cogs that can reach them.
- Center Tiles: Station your characters here so they can receive directional EXP bonuses from all surrounding cardinal and diagonal directions.
- Perimeter Tiles: Place outward-pointing directional cogs, utility cogs, or unlock flags around the outer edges.
- Tile Unlocking: Concentrate unlock flags on one or two tiles at a time to expand your usable grid faster. Aim toward corners and edges that expand total placement surface area.
- Fill All Slots: Do not leave empty board slots. Even low-tier EXP cogs contribute passive progress until you craft optimal replacements. Once all valuable tiles are unlocked, convert flag slots into active builder positions or directional boosters.
Salt Refinery Management
The Salt Refinery supplies critical resources for buildings, equipment, and high-tier cogs. Because higher-tier salts consume lower-tier salts as fuel, leveling refinery ranks indiscriminately will cause your production loop to run out of materials.
Never auto-refine Oxidized (Red) Salt early; let its tank hit 100% capacity before ranking it up.
| Salt Tier | Primary Fuel Cost | Level-Up Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Oxidized (Red) | Spore Caps, Copper Ore | Rank up only at 100% tank capacity; do not auto-refine early. |
| Shineling (Orange) | Red Salt, Oak Logs | Maintain an equal or lower rank than Red Salt. |
| Purp (Blue) | Orange Salt, Iron Ore | Keep ranked below Orange Salt consumption thresholds. |
| Grey, Green, Black | Preceding Salt Tiers | Rank up selectively based on your 3D Printer generation rates. |
If Orange Salt is ranked higher than your Red Salt production capacity, it will consume Red Salt faster than you produce it, stalling the entire refinery cycle. Keep your 3D Printer actively sampling base materials such as Spore Caps, Copper Ore, and Oak Logs to prevent input starvation.
Construction Building Upgrade Priority
Direct your early build points into infrastructure that automates material upkeep and multiplies account progression:
- 3D Printer: Build this first to duplicate base resources, monster drops, and ores, securing an uninterrupted fuel supply for your refinery.
- Automation Arm: Rush this structure to unlock automated daily chest deposits, food restocking, and automated refinery refueling.
- Death Note: Unlocks mob kill count milestones that grant account-wide damage and drop rate multipliers through regional task boards.
- Salt Refinery Expansions: Upgrade power and combustion rates to shorten cycle durations.
- Cost Cruncher & Shrines: Invest in the Cost Cruncher to lower the build cost of later structures, then put excess build capacity into shrines for map-wide combat and stat bonuses.
Warrior and Squire Class Synergies
Warriors—specifically the Squire and its World 4 progression, the Divine Knight—are the core drivers of the Construction skill due to class-specific talents:
- Refinery Throttle: This active talent instantly triggers refinery cycles. Leveling this talent and using it on cooldown yields hours of salt generation on demand.
- Bricky Skin: This Squire talent converts total physical Defense into additional Build Rate. Equipping defense-focused gear, upgrade stones, and star signs directly scales your construction progress.
Position your primary Squire or Divine Knight in the center of your cog grid where directional EXP bonuses overlap to accelerate their level scaling and maximize these synergies.
