To win with a unitless deck in KARDS - The WW2 Card Game, you must replace unit deployments entirely with defensive Orders and Countermeasures, concede physical control of the Frontline, and win through direct Headquarter (HQ) damage or deck exhaustion. Running zero units turns the match into an asymmetric control game: you deny the enemy targets for their unit removal spells while relying on pins and board clears to survive incoming attacks.

How the Unitless Archetype Functions

Omitting units creates an immediate structural card advantage. Standard decks run targeted destruction, combat buffs, and suppression cards designed to trade efficiently against opposing troops. When you deploy no infantry, artillery, or tanks, those cards become unplayable dead weight in your opponent's hand.

The cost of this strategy is immediate loss of board positioning. Because you have no units to block or contest territory, enemy units can advance straight into the Frontline uncontested. Surviving this structural deficit requires trading Kredits efficiently by spending less to neutralize a threat than the opponent spent to deploy it.

Early-Game Survival and Threat Management

During turns one through four, aggressive opponents will flood low-cost units into the Frontline to push for rapid HQ damage. Trying to eliminate every single unit immediately will deplete your hand before you reach your major board wipes.

Manage the opening turns by categorizing incoming threats:

  • Pin Advancing Attackers: Freezing an enemy unit with a pin prevents it from moving or attacking for a full turn. Pinning a unit costs fewer Kredits than destroying it, buying the tempo needed to reach higher Kredit thresholds.
  • Prioritize Snowball Threats: Use cheap spot removal like Sudden Strike immediately on units that generate card draw, buff other units, or scale their attack power. Ignore low-damage fodder until they can be cleared en masse.
  • Set Traps Proactively: Deploy Countermeasures such as Careless Talk before predictable enemy turns. Forcing the opponent to trigger traps disrupts their attack sequences and wastes their resources.

Mid-to-Late Game Board Control

Because you present no battlefield resistance, opponents naturally overcommit forces to the Frontline and Support Line to threaten lethal HQ damage. This overextension creates optimal conditions for high-cost mass-removal Orders.

Avoid firing board clears at just one or two targets. Wait until the opponent commits significant hand resources to an all-out assault, then reset the entire battlefield in a single action.

Securing the Win Condition

Without units to march into the enemy HQ, you must rely on alternate paths to finish the game:

  1. Direct HQ Burn: Direct damaging Orders like Tactical Strike and Shelling straight at the enemy base. Use this approach once the opponent's momentum has stalled and your remaining Kredits can cover both defense and HQ damage.
  2. Deck Exhaustion (Fatigue): In long matches, clearing every wave of attackers eventually forces the opponent through their 40-card deck. Drawing from an empty deck inflicts cumulative damage directly to their HQ each turn, securing an unavoidable win that bypasses the battlefield entirely.

Managing Key Deck Vulnerabilities

Fast Blitz-heavy decks and early-turn aggressive curves represent the primary failure points for a unitless build. If an opponent deals massive damage before you reach board-clear thresholds, the deck cannot recover.

To reinforce this archetype during deck construction:

  • Include dedicated HQ defense and sustain options like Cup of Tea or armor buffs to buffer your health pool against early chip damage.
  • Prioritize card-draw Orders to ensure you consistently hold removal spells suited to the current board state.
  • Monitor your Kredit curve to avoid loading your hand with heavy board clears you cannot cast before turn six.
