To survive the early campaign in Norse Expansion Medieval RTS, you must build a self-sustaining economy and defensive perimeter before attempting military expansion. Rushing troops or claiming territory too quickly depletes your food and gold reserves, leaving your base vulnerable to raids from bandits, giants, wizards, and rival kings.
Secure Your Food Supply and Base Upgrades
Your immediate objective is establishing a steady supply of food to maintain population growth and worker production. Place initial farms in fertile land close to your main castle to minimize transit times for villagers.
- Reinvest early gold: Avoid spending gold on early-game military units. Direct your starting resources into upgrading your granaries and town center.
- Prevent bottlenecks: Upgrade storage structures early. Reaching your storage capacity wastes active production time and halts economic scaling.
- Reallocate labor: If a specific resource hits its storage limit, move workers to building construction or alternative resource gathering.
Build Layered Fortifications
Hostile forces will target your base early. Base defense must be established prior to expanding your territory so your economic buildings remain safe during attacks.
- Construct layered walls: Place an outer wall to stall incoming waves and an inner wall to protect core structures if the outer perimeter breaks.
- Create chokepoints: Funnel enemy units through narrow pathways lined with defensive walls.
- Position towers effectively: Build defensive towers on high ground or immediately adjacent to key storage and production buildings.
- Maintain a border patrol: Keep a small mobile force near your outer walls to intercept roving bandits before they reach your gates.
Balance Military Recruitment and Expansion
Scale your military only after achieving an economic surplus where food and gold production clearly exceed your daily population costs.
| Objective | Prerequisites | Action Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Army Recruitment | Stable food supply & upgraded town center | Train high-health melee units to absorb damage alongside ranged units to deal damage to wizards and giants. |
| Territorial Expansion | Fully fortified main base & dedicated home defense squad | Clear surrounding enemy spawn points with a reconnaissance sweep before moving workers into a new zone. |
Do not move workers into uncleared zones. Unprotected expansion stretches your defenses, exposing new build sites to immediate attack.

Can you add more details about early game in a future update?
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
