To maximize damage and win trades with Riven in League of Legends: Wild Rift, weave a basic attack after every ability cast to consume Runic Blade passive charges, initiate trades with Valor to absorb incoming damage, and hold the second cast of your ultimate (Wind Slash) until enemy health drops below 25%.
Weaving Attacks with Runic Blade
Riven’s passive, Runic Blade, charges her weapon each time she casts an ability, granting bonus physical damage on subsequent basic attacks. She can store up to three charges at once. Chaining abilities together without landing basic attacks wastes these charges and drastically reduces both burst and sustained damage output.
During standard trades, use an alternating ability-and-attack cadence:
- Cast an ability (such as Broken Wings or Ki Burst).
- Immediately land an empowered basic attack to consume one Runic Blade charge.
- Cast the next ability in your sequence.
- Land another basic attack before moving or casting again.
While fast dashes can be chained together defensively to escape or close distance, offensive trades should always consume passive charges whenever the target is within reach.
Broken Wings Cast Sequence and Utility
Broken Wings (Ability 1) consists of three separate slashes before entering cooldown. Each cast repositions Riven in the direction she faces or toward a targeted unit.
| Cast Phase | Primary Function | Ideal Application |
|---|---|---|
| First Cast | Gap closing and damage | Close the gap to an opponent and prime Runic Blade for an empowered basic attack. |
| Second Cast | Repositioning | Move behind the enemy or sidestep incoming skill shots while dealing damage. |
| Third Cast | Area knockup and terrain hop | Disrupt channeled spells, chain crowd control, or leap over low terrain barriers. |
The third activation knocks up nearby enemies and allows Riven to jump across small environmental walls and structural barriers. When engaging, save the third cast to extend crowd control after a stun or to prevent the opponent from flashing away.
Short-Trade Sequences with Ki Burst and Valor
Ki Burst (Ability 2) stuns nearby enemies instantly with no cast delay, making it an effective tool to interrupt enemy auto-attack windups or dash animations.
Valor (Ability 3) dashes Riven in a targeted direction while providing a brief shield that scales with bonus attack damage. Cast Valor proactively to soak minion aggro and anticipated spell damage as you close the distance.
Standard Short Trade
- Dash in with Valor (Ability 3) to absorb incoming poke.
- Cast Ki Burst (Ability 2) immediately to stun the target before they can react.
- Land a passive-boosted basic attack.
- Disengage safely by using the first two casts of Broken Wings (Ability 1) away from the enemy before the stun wears off.
Blade of the Exile and Wind Slash Execution
Activating Blade of the Exile (Ultimate) reassembles Riven’s weapon, granting bonus attack damage, greater attack range, and increased reach on her damage abilities. Activate Blade of the Exile at the very start of an all-in fight, ideally during the forward dash of Valor to smooth the transition into combat.
While the ultimate is active, Riven can activate Wind Slash:
- Damage Threshold: Wind Slash deals physical damage based on missing enemy health and reaches its maximum damage against targets below 25% health. Firing it earlier wastes its execute scaling.
- Crowd-Control Buffering: Fire Wind Slash directly after the third hit of Broken Wings knocks up the enemy, or immediately following the stun from Ki Burst, to prevent them from dodging.
- Targeting: Aim Wind Slash through tightly grouped enemy carries during teamfights rather than using it solely on isolated tanks.
