To survive Sentinel escalation and deactivate planetary forces in No Man’s Sky, you must defeat five consecutive reinforcement waves on foot. Success requires destroying support drones before heavy units, cracking dropped Combat Supplies to instantly restore shields, and breaking armor plates in sequence on large targets.

Entering your starship during ground combat summons Sentinel interceptors into planetary orbit instead of clearing the alert, so you must resolve the encounter entirely on the surface.

Sentinel Escalation Levels

Planetary alerts begin at level one when you attack drones, harvest Gravitino Balls, mine high-value resources in front of patrols, or break into Manufacturing Facilities. If a scanning drone completes its call timer, reinforcement waves escalate in difficulty:

WavePrimary EnemiesKey ThreatsCombat Priority
Wave 12 Patrol DronesBasic tracking lasersEliminate drones before reinforcements spawn
Wave 2Patrol Drones, Repair DroneAutomated healing tethersDestroy the Repair Drone immediately
Wave 3Combat Drones, Sentinel QuadLunging melee and heavy sustained lasersClear support drones, then flank the Quad
Wave 4Combat Drones, Hardframe MechJetpack leaps, plasma mortars, flamethrowerBreak joint armor while staying mobile
Wave 5Heavy Drones, Sentinel WalkerHeavy beam cannon and explosive artilleryStrip leg and chest plates to expose the core

At alert levels one and two, you can escape combat by using your jetpack and sprinting to break line of sight until the search timer runs out. At level three and above, high-speed pursuit units make evasion difficult, requiring you to stand your ground and fight through wave five.

Target Priority: Support and Summoner Drones

Never focus on heavy ground targets while flying support drones remain active.

  • Repair Drones: These small drones cast green healing beams on damaged hostiles. Any fire directed at an armored unit is wasted while a Repair Drone actively restores its health bar.
  • Summoner Drones: Identified by their triangular shape and red glow, Summoner Drones do not attack directly. Instead, they project holographic spawn rings that summon fresh combat units. Destroy them immediately to prevent the encounter from multiplying.

High-burst weapons—such as an upgraded Scatter Blaster, Blaze Javelin, or burst-configured Boltcaster—eliminate these support units quickly before you turn your attention to frontline enemies.

Restoring Shields with Combat Supplies

Every destroyed Sentinel drops a glowing blue cylindrical canister called Combat Supplies. Rather than retreating to manually recharge hazard protection with Sodium or Ion Batteries, use these canisters directly during combat.

Running over a canister or shooting it with your multi-tool instantly shatters it, immediately refilling a large portion of your personal hazard shield. Canisters also grant Pugneum, nanite clusters, and Salvaged Glass. Leave several canisters on the ground across your combat area to serve as instant health stations when your shields drop.

Defeating Quads and Hardframe Mechs

Mid-tier waves introduce armored ground units with dangerous burst mechanics:

  • Sentinel Quads (Wave 3): Quads charge direct red lasers and launch lunging melee strikes. Their front armor resists standard fire. Strafe sideways, jump over charges with your jetpack, or stun them with a Paralysis Mortar to strike their unshielded sides and rear.
  • Hardframe Battle Mechs (Wave 4): Mechs leap directly toward you, firing close-range flamethrowers and long-range mortar shells. Keep moving laterally to avoid mortar impacts, maintain medium range to stay out of flame reach, and target the upper armor plates and leg joints. If you need immediate breathing room, use the Terrain Manipulator to carve an angled trench. Stepping into the trench breaks the Mech's line-of-sight laser and forces it into long jump animations.

How to Destroy the Sentinel Walker

Wave five deploys the Sentinel Walker. Firing directly at its glowing sensor head deals no damage until its outer armor shell is dismantled:

  1. Destroy the Leg Armor: Shoot the four individual armor plates covering the shins and thighs of both legs.
  2. Shatter the Torso Shell: Once all four leg plates are gone, destroy the armor plate covering the central chest compartment.
  3. Target the Core: With the protective plates removed, concentrate multi-tool fire directly into the glowing head unit. Sustained fire staggers the Walker until it collapses.

Throughout the fight, keep a solid obstacle or natural rock formation nearby. When the Walker charges its chin-mounted cannon, sprint perpendicularly behind cover to dodge the tracking beam.

Next Steps: Claiming the Sentinel Pillar

Destroying the Sentinel Walker clears wave five, resets your planetary alert level to zero, and yields Salvaged Glass and Walker Brains.

Clearing the final wave also puts all remaining Sentinels on the planet into a temporary shutdown state and marks the coordinates of the local Sentinel Pillar on your HUD. Travel directly to the Sentinel Pillar marker and interact with the control terminal to claim multi-tool rewards or permanently disable regional Sentinel patrols for the remainder of your planetary stay.
