To fight Vile Brood swarms and defeat a Brood Mother in No Man's Sky, locate an infested planet, destroy a Juicy Grub to trigger the assault, and use your jetpack to fight from the air. Staying airborne neutralizes melee ground units, while close-range burst weapons and automated Minotaur mech support clear out swarms and penetrate the Brood Mother's heavy armor.
How to Trigger Vile Brood Encounters
Vile Brood encounters do not trigger randomly. You must find an active nest on an infested world and provoke the swarm manually.
- Locate an infested world: Use your starship's planetary analysis visor from orbit to identify planets with infested or corrupt biome tags.
- Find biological activity: Land and scan the terrain with your analysis visor for biological anomalies and Vile Brood cluster markers.
- Crush a Juicy Grub: Search the ground and biological growths for Juicy Grubs. Shoot or interact with a grub to crush it.
- Prepare for immediate combat: Crushing a grub releases pheromones that summon subterranean swarms directly around your location, followed by the Brood Mother.
| Spawn Trigger | Threat Level | Primary Enemies Summoned |
|---|---|---|
| Juicy Grub Crushing | High | Swarmer drones, spitting horrors, Brood Mother |
| Whispering Egg Disturbance | Medium | Biological Horrors (ground dashers) |
| Infested Burrow Breach | Very High | Heavy armored brood, elite spitters, titan worms |
Best Multi-Tool Weapon Setups
Standard mining lasers and single-shot bolt weapons lack the spread and damage output needed to stop aggressive swarms. Equip high-burst or continuous area-of-effect weaponry to manage crowd pressure:
- Scatter Blaster: Acts as a point-blank shotgun. One spread eliminates basic crawling horrors before they reach striking distance.
- Neutron Cannon: Fires charged, wide-radius plasma bursts that pierce through packed ranks when bugs funnel through ravines or bottlenecks.
- Incinerator / Flamethrower: Applies continuous fire damage to unarmored swarms, clearing small units and preventing them from body-blocking your movement.
- Pulse Spitter: Delivers rapid sustained fire to chew through the armored carapaces of larger targets, provided you install recoil-reduction upgrades.
Avoid using the Plasma Launcher or Geology Cannon during swarm fights. Small horrors frequently leap directly toward you, causing fired grenades to detonate in your face and instantly deplete your personal shields.
Defensive Movement and Positioning
Standing still against a brood swarm will quickly overwhelm your shields through a mix of melee bites and tracking acid projectiles.
- Hover above the swarm: Ground swarmers cannot reach elevated targets. Pulse your jetpack thrusters in short bursts to stay airborne and fire downward instead of burning your entire fuel tank in one vertical jump.
- Evade acid mortars: When ranged spitters lob acid mortars toward you, dash horizontally mid-air to clear the splash radius before landing.
- Kite around high obstacles: If you must recover jetpack fuel on the ground, sprint in wide arcs around steep rocks, sheer drops, and structures. The swarm pathfinding frequently hangs on sharp vertical geometry.
- Avoid caves and enclosed trenches: Do not back into caves or deep pits. Bugs will spawn from ceilings and edges, trapping you in corners with no clear jump vector.
How to Defeat the Brood Mother
The Brood Mother spawns after the initial waves of the nest encounter. She has heavy frontal armor, high health pools, and attacks using both ranged acid mortars and kinetic shockwaves.
Target her vulnerable soft tissue to bypass her shell:
- Aim for glowing biological weak points: Direct your fire into the soft glowing zones located around her mouthparts, leg joints, and underbelly to score critical hit damage.
- Evade the ground slam: When the Brood Mother rears back on her hind legs, immediately jetpack backward. She is winding up a frontal ground slam that deals heavy kinetic shockwave damage across the immediate area.
- Counter-attack during recovery: Once the slam lands, use her brief recovery animation to lay uninterrupted fire into her head and mouth weak points.
- Clear spitters first: If smaller spitting horrors spawn during the fight, eliminate them immediately so their acid mortars do not stagger you while dodging the boss.
Deploying Minotaur Mech Support
Taking on swarm nests purely on foot puts heavy strain on your Exosuit hazard protection and life support. Calling in an upgraded Minotaur Heavy Exocraft provides essential fire support and protection:
- Autonomous combat: Install the Minotaur AI Pilot module. The autonomous mech draws aggro away from you, stomps smaller swarmers, and fires heavy cannons at the Brood Mother while you hover and flank from above.
- Acid pool immunity: Piloting the Minotaur manually grants complete immunity to surface acid puddles left by spitters and the Brood Mother.
- Mobility over rough ground: Use the Minotaur's mechanical jump jets to rapidly reposition out of swarm choke points and deliver vehicle-mounted laser fire directly into the center of the nest.
