To win rounds in Northgard Battlegrounds, stabilize your village resource generation before committing heavy spending to your army. Because combat currency and deployment limits are generated directly by your town rather than fixed round interest, early investments in gathering and production dictate how effectively you can field and upgrade units during combat phases.

The Dual-Phase Loop

Matches alternate between a real-time settlement phase and an automated combat phase:

  1. Settlement Phase: You survey territory, assign villagers to resource nodes, construct camps, and spend currency on units before the phase timer expires.
  2. Combat Phase: Your active warband automatically deploys onto the tactical grid to battle a rival clan based on proximity, unit roles, and synergy traits.

Because military capacity requires physical camp buildings and unit purchases require steady currency, neglecting your town leaves you with an underpowered board. Conversely, spending all resources on village infrastructure leaves you with too few troops to survive combat rounds.

Early Town Priorities

Establish baseline production immediately to prevent economic stalls:

  • Construct Woodcutter and Food Lodges First: Running out of Food stops villager population growth, starving your settlement of the workforce required for future expansion. Wood is required to construct new camps and repair damaged buildings.
  • Claim Strategic Tiles Only: Use Food to expand into adjacent zones only if they offer valuable resource deposits or open building slots. Avoid spending Food on low-value wilderness early in the match.
  • Build Krown Infrastructure: Erect marketplaces or trading posts quickly. Krowns serve as the direct currency for drafting units, rerolling the recruitment pool, and buying unit tier upgrades.

Board Deployment and Positioning

Unit stats alone will not win rounds if placement exposes vulnerable troops. Combat resolves automatically, making initial placement critical:

  • Frontline: Place durable shield-bearers and bruisers directly in the path of the primary enemy advance to absorb opening damage.
  • Flanks: Position mobile, high-damage melee units one row back or off to the sides so they engage after enemy units lock onto your tanks.
  • Backline: Place ranged attackers and support units behind your frontline anchors so they deal sustained damage and apply healing or defensive buffs safely.
  • Tier Merges Over Wide Boards: Complete unit rank upgrades rather than keeping unupgraded units on your bench. Upgraded units provide higher health pools and damage thresholds per deployment slot.

Mid-Game Pivot: Scaling vs. Board Stabilization

Evaluate your settlement health and round record to decide whether to invest in infrastructure or immediate military power:

  • When Leading: Spend surplus Krowns on upgrading your Town Hall and military camps. Higher-tier buildings unlock elite clan champions and advanced unit ranks that outscale standard troops.
  • When Losing Rounds: Immediately halt long-term town construction. Spend all available Krowns on unit rerolls, complete existing unit rank merges, and fill your active deployment cap to prevent taking lethal settlement damage.
