To defeat the Goat Clan (Heidrun) as the Horse Clan (Svadilfari) in Northgard, avoid an endurance-based economic race against their sheepfolds and feast bonuses. Instead, recruit twin warchiefs Brok and Eitria early to mine Iron and Stone without pulling villagers off baseline food and wood production, forge the Hrungnir relic at Völund's Forge, and launch a decisive military push between late Year 801 and Year 802 to break Goat's fortified towers.
Early-Game Setup: Recruiting Brok and Eitria
Recruiting both warchiefs between Year 800 and Year 801 establishes the tempo for the matchup. Unlike standard clans that must build Blacksmiths and assign regular villagers to mining pits, the Horse Clan relies on Brok and Eitria to extract metal and forge gear without dedicated building slots or productivity penalties.
- Scout for Metal: Explore adjacent tiles immediately to find an Iron deposit, clearing hostile wolves or draugr with standard warriors only when necessary.
- Summon the First Warchief: Spend starting Krowns and materials to summon either Brok or Eitria, then send that warchief directly to mine Iron.
- Fund the Second Twin: Use the extracted Iron to recruit the second warchief. Assign one warchief to mine Stone while the other handles basic construction, clears tile threats, or begins forging.
- Preserve Villager Upkeep: Keep your regular population assigned to Woodcutter Lodges and food gathering so your colony sustains growth during early expansion.
Stockpiling Stone through the warchiefs accelerates Town Hall and production building upgrades, allowing military camps to go up earlier than Goat anticipates.
Forging Priorities at Völund's Forge
The Horse Clan replaces the standard Blacksmith with Völund's Forge. Upgrading this structure improves production across the tile and raises combat statistics for Brok and Eitria. Because the twin warchiefs forge upgrades without halting civilian work, keep them actively forging whenever they are not clearing borders or mining.
| Upgrade | Primary Effect | Strategic Role vs. Goat |
|---|---|---|
| Hrungnir (Relic) | Summons a controllable Undead Giant | Absorbs defensive watchtower fire and front-line militia attacks |
| Warrior Tools | Increases base Warrior melee attack | Rapidly clears defenders before Feast regeneration takes effect |
| Production Tools | Boosts targeted resource output | Sustains Krown income without building dedicated trade routes |
Crafting the clan relic, Hrungnir, takes top priority once your Town Hall upgrade is complete. Hrungnir provides the durability required to crack Goat's fortified zones without losing your standing army to tower crossfire. If metal nodes are delayed, prioritize Warrior or Shield Bearer tool upgrades.
Neutralizing Goat Clan's Defensive Economy
The Goat Clan excels at defensive turtling by combining sheepfold food engines with frequent Feasts that raise happiness and resource yields. Conquering them requires denying their economic engine rather than fighting long wars of attrition:
- Disrupt Stone Expansion: Goat requires heavy Stone reserves to upgrade towers and regional hubs. Use Brok and Eitria's combat stats to seize contested Stone tiles in neutral zones early.
- Track Feast Cycles: Do not attack neutral zones or contest borders while Goat has an active Feast running. Wait for their celebration buff to expire before initiating skirmishes.
- Refuse Prolonged Trades: Goat can quickly convert surplus population into defenders when fought at their border. Do not trade single units back and forth; mass a cohesive army before crossing into their territory.
Army Composition and Sieging Goat Defenses
Transition into an offensive military between late Year 801 and Year 802. Construct two to three Training Camps or Shield Bearer Camps on tiles boosted by Völund's Forge to raise your warband cap efficiently.
When attacking Goat defense towers, control unit targeting carefully:
- Absorb Tower Aggro: Move Hrungnir and Eitria into the enemy tile first so watchtowers and militia lock onto them.
- Advance Shield Bearers: Send three to four Shield Bearers forward to suppress ranged damage from upgraded watchtowers and Axe Throwers.
- Engage with Brok and Warriors: Path Brok and standard Warriors behind the frontline tanks to burn down the watchtower and eliminate defensive units.
- Bait Overcommitments: If Goat activates a reactive Feast and drafts heavy militia, retreat across your border. Goat will drain food and Krowns maintaining standing soldiers, while Brok and Eitria passively regenerate health on friendly territory.
Executing the Final Domination Push
As the game enters Year 803, pick up the Metalcraft and Legacy lores to convert your accumulated metal into steady happiness and Lore generation. Maintain sufficient food reserves so winter penalties do not blunt your military effectiveness during an ongoing siege.
Once the perimeter watchtowers fall, move directly into Goat's sheepfold tiles. De-colonizing their food hubs eliminates their ability to replenish militia casualties. Protect Brok and Eitria from concentrated fire, push onto the Town Hall tile, and finalize a Domination victory before the opponent can reconstruct perimeter defenses.
