In Northgard, the Kingdom of the Lion can overcome steep military recruitment costs by forging its unique relic, the Holy Sepulchre. This relic gives fallen military units a chance to resurrect at your home territory, allowing you to sustain continuous combat pressure without continually expending Faith, Krowns, and civilian population to recruit replacements.

How the Holy Sepulchre Revival Works

Lion Clan military units require heavy investments of Faith and Krowns. When standard clans lose an army, they permanently lose the invested villagers, weapons, and gold. The Holy Sepulchre alters this dynamic:

  • Base Resurrections: Fallen units trigger a resurrection chance that spawns them back at your core territory (such as near your Town Hall or Abbey).
  • Workforce Preservation: Because revived units return directly to your military ranks, your civilian population remains focused on food, Faith, and coin production instead of being drafted to replace casualties.
  • Economic Trade-Off: Resurrected units do not cost new drafting fees, but they still consume standard food and ongoing upkeep. You must maintain an active economy to sustain an endlessly reviving standing army.

Forging Timeline and Setup (Years 801–802)

To complete the Holy Sepulchre by late 801 or early 802, focus your early settlement on rapid Faith generation and Iron extraction.

  1. Scout and Clear Food Deposits: Scout adjacent zones immediately to secure food and locate an Iron deposit. Use initial Levies to clear light neutral wildlife so your villagers preserve their health for gathering.
  2. Build an Early Abbey: Construct an Abbey as soon as timber reserves permit. Assign Monks to produce Faith, which powers Lion clan development and technology progression.
  3. Mine 10 Iron: Colonize an Iron tile and build a Mining Camp during the summer of 801. Mine exactly the 10 Iron required for the relic, then reassign the miners to basic gathering or construction.
  4. Build the Smithy: Place a Smithy in a developed zone with available building capacity. Assign two smiths full-time to forge the Holy Sepulchre.
  5. Establish Trade and Stockpiles: While forging is underway, build Marketplaces and establish trade routes. You will need a steady flow of Krowns and Food to cover the upkeep of surviving and revived units through winter.

Military Unit Revival Value

The Holy Sepulchre returns the highest value when reviving expensive high-tier units rather than basic defensive troops.

Unit TypeCombat RoleResource Cost ProfileRevival Synergy
PaladinFrontline TankHigh Faith and KrownsCritical: High armor and durability let revived Paladins absorb heavy tower and unit damage repeatedly.
ChampionSingle-Target DamageHeavy Krowns and Weapon investmentHigh: Sustains offensive siege damage across extended fights without repurchasing weapon costs.
LevyTemporary BufferLow initial costModerate: Useful for early defense, but low statutory durability provides poor long-term revival value.

Build your warband around a core of Paladins backed by your Champion. Send Paladins into contested border tiles first to absorb tower fire and enemy abilities. If a Paladin falls early in the engagement, their revival process begins while the rest of your force continues the assault.

Reinforcement Cycling and Map Pressure

Because resurrected troops respawn at your core territory, the transit time between your base and the enemy front line is your main bottleneck. Keep pressure steady using these tactics:

  • Stagger Reinforcements: Do not wait for your entire warband to fall before marching again. Group revived units into small waves of two or three as they spawn and send them back to the front line immediately.
  • Colonize Staging Tiles: As soon as an enemy border zone is cleared, de-neutralize and colonize it using Food and Faith. Building a defensive camp or Watchtower on newly captured ground creates a staging point that cuts travel distance for subsequent waves.
  • Manage Frontline Aggro: Pull low-health Paladins toward the edge of the combat tile. If they disengage, they survive; if the enemy chases and finishes them, they immediately begin their respawn cycle while pulling enemy units out of position.

Defending Against Timing Attacks

Rushing the Holy Sepulchre creates vulnerability in year 801. Allocating 10 Iron, building materials, and two full-time smiths delays tool upgrades and leaves your standing army small. Aggressive clans such as Wolf or Snake may scout the forge and attack before the relic finishes.

To prevent early defeat:

  • Keep a reserve of Food and Krowns so you can temporarily draft Levies or local militia without starving your settlement.
  • If scouted by an aggressive opponent, pause relic forging for one month to allocate resources toward emergency defense.
  • Track winter food consumption closely. A large army of revived Paladins will trigger starvation penalties if winter arrives without adequate stockpiles.
