To maximize early expansion in Northgard, manipulate zone borders to clear hostile tiles without casualties, place gathering structures against resource nodes to eliminate walking delays, and reassign wounded units before production penalties stall your growth.
Reset Neutral Aggro with Border Dancing
Neutral hostiles like Wolves and Draugr only defend their assigned tile. Stepping backward across the sector line into neutral or friendly territory immediately breaks their attack leash, forcing the monster to turn around and path back toward its spawn node. This reset cancels ongoing enemy attack animations before damage registers.
Execute this border-dancing sequence to clear contested tiles with minimal military support:
- Send in a bait unit: Walk a single healthy unit across the border first to draw initial aggression from all creeps in the tile.
- Commit secondary attackers: Send remaining damage dealers across the boundary a second later to attack the focused monster.
- Retreat the targeted unit: As the enemy initiates its swing animation, pull only the targeted unit back across the sector line.
- Rotate incoming hits: Send a different full-health unit across the line next to take the creep's attention, ensuring no single unit drops below 50% health.
Do not leave neutral creeps out of combat for extended periods. Once a creep resets and remains disengaged, its health rapidly regenerates. Keep secondary units actively attacking to maintain damage while cycling primary targets.
Reduce Gathering Walk Times
Villagers only produce resources during their active harvesting animations at a node. Time spent walking between a drop-off building and a resource deposit yields zero Wood, Food, or Lore.
- Woodcutter's Lodge: Zoom in on forested tiles and rotate the lodge so its entrance door points directly toward the densest cluster of trees.
- Hunter's Lodge: Place the structure immediately adjacent to the roaming boundary of the deer herd.
- Fishermen's Hut: Position the foundation as close to the water's edge as terrain collision allows.
If terrain obstacles force long transit routes between the node and the collection building, choose an alternate tile with clearer paths to preserve your early-game economy.
Cycle Wounded Workers and Staffing
Units below 50% health suffer a 20% penalty to their gathering output and lower overall clan Happiness, which delays new villager arrivals at the Town Hall.
Construction, mining, and exploration tasks do not incur the primary gathering yield penalty. Reassign damaged population members based on their current health:
| Unit Health Status | Recommended Assignment | Inefficient Assignment |
|---|---|---|
| Full Health (100%) | Gathering Food, chopping Wood, clearing tiles | Idling, staging inside military camps |
| Wounded (>50% HP) | Mining Stone or Iron, constructing buildings | Harvesting primary Food deposits |
| Critically Hurt (<50% HP) | Healing at Healer's Hut, scouting frontier tiles | Basic Food harvesting, timber cutting |
Manage Healer's Huts dynamically. Do not leave two active Healers assigned permanently. Once wounded villagers are healed past the 50% health threshold, immediately reassign the Healers back to standard resource gathering to avoid unnecessary labor loss.
Direct Scouts and Delay Military Conversion
Scouts and standing soldiers consume food and upkeep without generating raw resources. Streamlining their usage preserves your early stockpile for winter.
- Redirect Scouts manually: Direct your Scout along the edge of the fog of war. As soon as the minimap reveals a tile's contents (such as Sheep, Ruins, Stone, Iron, or creep dens), redirect the Scout to the next unexplored boundary rather than clearing the entire tile interior. Unassign the Scout during late summer to store extra food for winter.
- Convert soldiers at the boundary: Training Warriors, Axe Throwers, or Shield Bearers prematurely drains Krowns and Food. Keep units working as standard villagers until clearing is required. Walk the assigned workers to a border training camp adjacent to the target tile, convert them immediately before crossing the line, clear the sector, and disband or redirect them before upkeep drains your gold balance.

Good guide for Northgard players. The early game part was useful.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about early game in a future update?
