To win attrition wars as the Clan of the Snake (Svafnir) in Northgard, deploy small squads of Skirmishers to raid unprotected frontier tiles, then immediately retreat across the border when defending armies mobilize. Svafnir cannot build a King's Altar and earns no Fame. Rather than building toward standard 200- or 500-Fame army clashes, your objective is to force opponents to repeatedly burn Wood, Food, and Kröwns converting Villagers into defensive units.
The Border Harassment Loop
Svafnir wins through economic disruption rather than immediate territorial conquest. Every time an opponent recruits Warriors to repel a raid, they lose gathering labor and incur continuous military upkeep.
Execute the loop using these steps:
- Enter an outer production zone: Move Skirmishers across the border to target workers and production buildings.
- Force the military conversion: Wait until the defender converts multiple Villagers into combat units to contest the tile.
- Disengage immediately: Step back across the border into neutral territory the moment the defender's army arrives.
- Re-enter after demobilization: Monitor the tile. Once the opponent demobilizes their military back into workers to balance their economy, immediately invade again.
| Tactic | Conventional Army Confrontation | Svafnir Border Attrition |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Goal | Army wipe and Town Hall capture | Economic starvation and idle worker time |
| Resource Target | Defender health and defense structures | Kröwn conversion costs and ongoing upkeep |
| Engagement Type | Committed open-field clash | Hit-and-run attacks along tile borders |
| Retreat Trigger | Casualties or morale loss | Defender mobilization on the contested tile |
Skirmisher Infiltration and Target Priority
Skirmishers possess the Cloaked trait, meaning hostile neutral creatures such as Draugr, Wolves, and Bears ignore them. You can bypass defensive choke points and watchtowers by pathing through uncleared wilderness tiles, though you must still steer clear of hazards like Lynx clan spike traps.
Prioritize targets that disrupt immediate survival:
- Farms and Gathering Silos: Killing Farmers and setting fire to food infrastructure drains enemy wood reserves for repairs right before seasonal shifts.
- Woodcutter Lodges and Scout Camps: Destroying these buildings blinds the enemy and delays secondary building upgrades.
- Unprotected Villagers: Eliminating builders or gatherers permanently stalls expansion and population momentum.
Keep Skirmishers within two paces of the tile border. If contested, retreat into uncleared neutral tiles where opposing armies cannot follow without pulling aggression from native wildlife.
Signy's Age Milestones
Because Svafnir does not scale with Clan Fame, your tactical timing windows depend entirely on Signy's age:
- Age 15 (Initial Spawn): Signy functions as an early combatant suitable for clearing or supporting local raids.
- Age 16 (Cloaked Unlocked): Signy gains the Cloaked trait, allowing her to traverse neutral tiles alongside Skirmishers without triggering wildlife attacks. Her burst damage allows strike teams to overpower lone guards and militia quickly.
- Age 17 (Scorched Earth Unlocked): Signy gains the Scorched Earth active ability. Igniting an enemy tile grants combat buffs to your invading units while shutting down the tile's resource output. Activating this on a primary food tile during late autumn drains enemy winter food stockpiles.
Lore and Economic Setup
Relying on constant raids requires a focused internal economy to cover military upkeep without widespread territorial expansion:
- Build Trading Posts and a Marketplace early: A dedicated Kröwn engine ensures continuous gold flow to replace fallen Skirmishers.
- Take Rapine: Grants gold and additional resources whenever your raiding squads burn enemy structures or eliminate civilian units.
- Take Under Pressure: Grants Happiness and attack power based on armed units positioned in adjacent tiles, removing the need to invest in brewery infrastructure.
- Select Stolen Lore: Choose stolen options such as Swinecrafters or Field Rations to stabilize food reserves or cut military supply penalties.
Defending Against Counterattacks in Winter
Snake Clan units lack the heavy defensive stats required to win direct standoffs against armored warbands or high-morale defenders. To protect your home territory from counter-pushes:
- Place an upgraded Watch Tower on your most vulnerable frontier tile to delay incoming counter-raids.
- Maintain border scouts to track enemy army movements toward your territory.
- Pull all Skirmishers back into friendly territory when winter arrives.
- Convert idle military units back into gatherers if your Kröwn reserves drop, allowing winter attrition to weaken any enemy force marching through your border before you resume raids in the spring.
