To sustain a healthy settlement in Northgard, you must actively control unit upkeep, preserve your workforce through combat micro, and prepare your resource stockpiles well before winter arrives. Idle military units drain food and Kröwns, while reckless expansion and unplanned building upgrades exhaust finite materials like Stone.
---
Rotate Wounded Units During Combat
Neutral wildlife, Draugr, and enemy warbands automatically target the first allied unit that enters a tile or initiates an attack. Because replacement Villagers take time to spawn from your Town Hall and military recruitment costs scale upward in Kröwns, losing units directly damages your economy.
To preserve injured soldiers:
- Pull the targeted unit back: Select the focused unit individually and move them toward the edge of the zone or behind your front line.
- Reassign enemy aggro: Once the enemy retargets an ally with full health, send the wounded unit back in to deal damage safely.
- Cross the border if aggro does not break: Move the wounded unit into friendly territory. Neutral creatures cannot follow across colonized borders unless they are staging an active raid.
Keeping wounded soldiers alive allows a Healer's Hut or the Medicine Lore to restore your army's health without wasting population or paying recruitment fees.

Demobilize Warbands to Cut Upkeep Costs
Standing military units—such as Warriors, Axe Throwers, and Shield Bearers—do not produce resources. They consume baseline Food upkeep and impose an ongoing Kröwn drain.
Convert military units back into Villagers whenever active combat ends:
- Send units to civilian tasks: Assign military units to basic production buildings or open territory to revert them to unassigned Villagers.
- Regain passive labor: Villagers gather Food, construct buildings, and repair structures without draining your treasury.
- Recruit only when needed: Train military units immediately before clearing resource-rich tiles (such as deposits of Stone, Iron, or Fertile Soil), right before defending against incoming wolf or Draugr raids, or directly ahead of a planned offensive.

Prioritize High-Impact Stone Upgrades
Stone deposits on Northgard maps are finite. Mining them consumes labor that could otherwise gather Food or Wood, making haphazard upgrades inefficient.
Upgrade structures according to their strategic return:
| Building Priority | Primary Benefit | Strategic Value |
|---|---|---|
| Town Hall | Unlocks Tier 2 upgrades and boosts base output | Prerequisite for mid-game territory and technology scaling |
| Scout Camp | Speeds up scouting rate | Discovers ruins, choke points, and rival borders faster |
| Food Silo | Expands storage and grants percentage food bonus | Mitigates winter food penalties without extra workers |
| Military Camps | Expands maximum warband capacity | Prepares your clan for decisive military engagements |
Avoid upgrading standard residential houses early in the match. Unless your territory is strictly constrained by impassable terrain or hostiles, colonizing an additional zone is generally cheaper than spending limited Stone on extra housing slots.

Stockpile Supplies Before Winter and Blizzards
Winter reduces natural Food output by 30% or more and increases Firewood consumption. If the match event timeline indicates an approaching Blizzard, these penalties double.
Prepare your stores during the warm months using these baselines:
- Begin saving early: Start stockpiling surplus resources around the fifth or sixth month (late summer).
- Hit minimum thresholds: Store at least 150 to 200 Food and 100 Wood before November begins. Increase these targets if a Blizzard is scheduled.
- Boost passive production: Place a Food Silo on your best food-producing tile (farms, hunting grounds, or fishing zones) to maximize the warm-season yield, and build a Woodcutter's Lodge on a forested tile to secure wood bonuses.

Colonize Expansion Tiles Selectively
Every zone you claim increases the Food cost of the next colonization. Expanding into empty or low-value zones inflates future expansion costs and delays access to essential resources.
Before claiming a new zone, verify that it contains strategic assets:
- High-value targets: Prioritize tiles containing Lore Stones, Iron, Stone, or natural Food sources.
- Low-value tiles: Avoid colonizing empty tiles that offer only general building space unless they serve as a critical defensive choke point toward an opponent. Leave secondary tiles uncolonized until your core resource infrastructure is established.

The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
Good guide for Northgard players. The strategy part was useful.
This saved me time in the early game.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Northgard articles next.
