To hunt an apex dinosaur as a small carnivore in Path of Titans, you must exhaust the target's stamina pool before committing to damage, stay strictly glued to the blind pocket behind its hips, and disengage the moment your own stamina drops. Small carnivores cannot survive direct trades against massive combat weights, so every engagement relies on baiting missed attacks, punishing animation recovery, and retreating into restrictive terrain.

Target Selection and Apex Profiles

Only engage solitary apexes. Even a single mid-tier pack mate, such as a Ceratosaurus or Megalania, can body-block your escape routes or trade hits while the apex repositions. Target lone apexes traversing broken terrain rather than giants resting in open fields like Grand Plains or Green Valley.

Baiting and Depleting Apex Stamina

Apexes possess shallow stamina pools that drain quickly during sprints, charges, and special attacks like the Rex's Bone Break. Depleting this pool removes their ability to pursue you or reposition quickly.

  1. Establish a Spacing Buffer: Stand just outside the apex's reach to tempt an attack without entering its hitbox.
  2. Feign Approaches: Make short dashes toward the flank to trigger defensive swings, then tap sprint in reverse to pull back. Every missed attack wastes the apex's stamina.
  3. Prevent Resting: Once the apex stops swinging and attempts to stand still or walk to regain stamina, orbit it at a trot. Continuous pressure keeps the apex turning and prevents it from entering a resting state.

Positioning in the Hip Blind Spot

Never cross directly in front of an apex's snout. To switch sides, always rotate completely around the tail tip while monitoring for tail attacks.

  • Orbit at a Trot: Conserve your own stamina by trotting in a tight circle around the apex's hindquarters instead of sprinting continuously.
  • Anchor Behind the Hips: Position yourself right behind the hip joint. This pocket keeps you out of the frontal bite cone and away from the direct center line of heavy tail attacks.
  • Toggle Precision Turning: Use precision movement keys to pivot on the spot when the target attempts to turn, matching its rotation speed and keeping yourself behind its legs.
  • Punish Recovery Windows: Strike the heels or the base of the tail immediately after the apex misses an attack animation, then step back into the safe pocket.

Dealing Chip Damage with Bleed and Pounce

Small carnivores rely on damage over time and hit-and-run strikes to wear down high combat weights.

  • Managing Bleed: Apply bleed bites during animation recovery windows and step back. Allow the apex to drain its own health by forcing it to turn, walk, and swing while bleeding.
  • Timing the Pounce: Do not pounce an apex with full stamina; the target will quickly buck you off, draining your stamina and dropping you at its feet. Wait until the apex has burned at least half its stamina through missed swings.
  • Manual Detach: Once latched, deliver several quick strikes and detach manually before your stamina drops below 30 percent. Always reserve enough stamina to sprint clear of ground stomps or tail attacks upon landing.

Using Terrain to Disengage

When your stamina falls below safe thresholds or you take a hit, break line of sight immediately using micro-terrain.

  • Dense Trees: Sprint through tightly clustered trees. Small carnivores navigate narrow gaps easily, while apex collision boxes snag on trunks.
  • Vertical Elevation: Climb steep inclines and hop across rock ledges. Apexes cannot scale sharp slopes or make sudden drops without suffering severe fall damage.
  • Safe Recovery: Hide behind tall rock formations or dense foliage to sit or sleep. Maintain visual or audio awareness of the target to prevent it from resting, healing, or safe-logging before you resume the hunt.
