To survive and win solo fights as a Deinonychus in Path of Titans, you must wage a war of attrition through hit-and-run attacks, vertical maneuvering, and controlled pounces. Deinonychus possesses exceptionally low combat weight and a frail health pool. A single direct bite or tail attack from larger dinosaurs—such as a Ceratosaurus or Allosaurus—can inflict severe bone break or kill you outright. Winning solo requires baiting heavy attacks, latching onto safe flanks, and dismounting well before your stamina empties.
Managing the Pounce and Enemy Bucking
The latching pounce is Deinonychus's primary offensive tool, allowing you to cling to an opponent's body and deal sustained damage while evading ground-level bites. However, remaining latched too long is the most common cause of death in solo combat.
When you attach to an opponent, your stamina depletes continuously. The target will immediately buck to shake you off, which drastically increases the rate of stamina loss. If your stamina drops to zero while latched, you suffer an involuntary dismount that drops you directly at the target's feet with no stamina to escape.
| Pounce Phase | Safe Execution | Critical Danger |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Bait out a primary attack or tail swing, then sprint-jump toward the mid-body or flank. | Leaping directly into frontal bite cones or active head hitboxes. |
| Latched Attack | Deal rapid damage while watching your stamina gauge and the target's bucking rhythm. | Clinging through sustained bucking animations, which empties stamina in seconds. |
| Dismount | Manually release the latch once stamina drops to roughly 30%. | Waiting for zero stamina, causing an involuntary drop and instant stamina exhaustion. |
Always target the center flank or hips of your opponent. Attaching too close to the neck or head exposes you to head-tracking hitboxes on certain large theropods.
Mobility, Vertical Spacing, and Fall Damage
Deinonychus relies on rapid acceleration and vertical mobility to dictate engagements. Sprint-leaping covers immense horizontal distance, allowing you to clear obstacles and cross broken terrain that heavier, ground-bound dinosaurs cannot traverse.
- Claim elevated ground: Fight near boulders, steep embankments, or fallen logs. Perching on terrain prevents opponents from trampling you or pivoting quickly to land attacks.
- Leap past turning radii: Use sprint-jumps to clear tail sweeps and land outside an opponent's turning circle, forcing them to burn stamina trying to reorient.
- Exploit fall damage mitigation: Deinonychus takes significantly reduced falling damage compared to mid-tier and apex carnivores. Dropping off high cliffs breaks pursuer line of sight, forcing them to walk down the slope or sustain severe fall damage if they follow.
- Preserve escape stamina: Never spend your entire stamina pool on offensive leaps. Always keep at least 25% of your stamina bar available to sprint toward high ground or dense cover.
Hit-and-Run Tactics and Target Selection
Solo Deinonychus combat relies on forcing opponents to waste stamina while slowly accumulating bleed damage. If an opponent refuses to chase you, harass their rear legs with quick hit-and-run strikes to force them into reactive sprinting.
When disengaging to recover stamina:
- Sprint immediately toward pre-scouted obstacles, such as dense forest thickets or narrow rock corridors.
- Break direct line of sight to halt incoming charges.
- Drop to a trot or crouch behind cover to regenerate stamina while tracking the opponent's position and bleed status.
Engaging Apex Carnivores
Large theropods like Tyrannosaurus rex and Spinosaurus have massive turning radiuses that make them vulnerable to flank attacks, but their tail sweeps deal catastrophic damage.
Never approach large carnivores directly from behind. Approach at a 90-degree perpendicular angle toward the hip after the target commits to a forward attack animation. If the target backs into deep water or walls off their flanks against a cliff face, immediately break off the attack. Disengage and wait for them to relocate to open ground before attempting another approach.

This guide answered the exact question I had.
This saved me time in the early game.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
