To beat Bacteria on Normal difficulty in Plague Inc. and unlock the Virus plague type, keep your pathogen completely nonlethal until 100 percent of the world is infected. Once humanity is fully infected and borders no longer matter, spend your stockpiled DNA points immediately on Total Organ Failure to kill the global population before cure research can complete.
Selecting a Starting Country
A fast clear relies on generating early DNA points through rapid population spread without spending DNA on immediate climate adaptations. Densely populated developing countries with active ports and airports provide the best starting conditions.
- India: Offers massive population density, hot climate conditions, and high-volume sea and air routes. Infections compound rapidly, accelerating early DNA bubble generation.
- China: Provides comparable high-density population benefits and active transit networks for fast early transmission.
- Saudi Arabia: Acts as an international air travel hub connecting Africa, Europe, and Asia, though raw infection counts rise slightly slower than in India.
Pop red and orange DNA bubbles as soon as they appear. Save these initial points for transmission upgrades rather than purchasing random mutations.
Core Transmissions and Bacterial Resilience
Bacteria has low base infectivity and needs specific vectors to spread through international travel routes. Prioritize transmission traits over disease severity.
- Water 1 and Air 1: Enables the bacteria to survive aboard international flights and cargo ships, reaching island nations like Australia, Japan, and the United Kingdom before borders close.
- Water 2 and Air 2: Increases transmission rates across maritime and aviation routes.
- Extreme Bioaerosol: Unlocked after Air 2 and Water 2. Allows the pathogen to bypass filtered aircraft ventilation and sealed maritime containers.
Alongside transmission vectors, invest in the Bacteria plague type's unique ability, Bacterial Resilience.
| Trait Tier | In-Game Effect | Practical Function |
|---|---|---|
| Bacterial Resilience 1 | Hardens bacterial shell against weather | Enhances survival across varied climates |
| Bacterial Resilience 2 | Reinforces shell durability | Prevents spread stalls in extreme heat and cold |
| Bacterial Resilience 3 | Maximum climate fortification | Secures infection rates regardless of local biome |
Unlocking Bacterial Resilience 1 and 2 early prevents your infection from slowing down as it moves from warm starting regions into temperate territories.
Controlling Symptoms and Cure Research
Human medical organizations only allocate funding toward cure research when a pathogen exhibits noticeable severity or lethality. On Normal difficulty, keeping disease severity near zero prevents world governments from closing land borders, shutting down airports, or screening maritime ports.
Check the Disease screen whenever an automatic mutation occurs:
- Benign Symptoms (Coughing, Sneezing, Cysts): Provide minor infectivity boosts, but increase visibility slightly.
- Noticeable Symptoms (Rash, Vomiting, Insomnia): Raise severity and draw global attention.
Devolve any aggressive or noticeable symptoms that mutate while healthy populations remain. On Normal difficulty, devolving an unwanted symptom refunds two DNA points, keeping severity low while returning resources to your pool.
Overcoming Wealthy and Cold Regions
Wealthy nations possess advanced healthcare systems that slow transmission, while cold biomes drastically reduce bacterial reproduction. Isolated northern territories—particularly Greenland, Iceland, and Canada—can stall a run if unaddressed.
- Drug Resistance 1: Counteracts modern healthcare systems in wealthy regions such as the United States and Western Europe.
- Cold Resistance 1 and Cold Resistance 2: Allows the bacteria to spread efficiently through cold northern climates.
Greenland and Iceland depend almost entirely on maritime shipping routes. Upgrading Water 2, Bacterial Resilience, and Cold Resistance ensures your bacteria can establish a foothold in these ports before any quarantine measures trigger. Do not evolve lethal symptoms until the game displays the pop-up banner: "There are no healthy people left on Earth."
Transitioning to Lethality
When global infection reaches 100 percent, border closures and detection no longer threaten your run. Pause the game immediately and spend your stockpiled DNA points down the central lethal branch of the Symptoms tree:
- Evolve Coughing and Pneumonia (or route through Cysts and Hyper Sensitivity).
- Evolve Pulmonary Oedema.
- Evolve Total Organ Failure.
Total Organ Failure rapidly spikes the lethality meter, killing infected hosts within days. If surplus DNA points remain, purchase Necrosis, Hemorrhagic Shock, or Coma. Necrosis preserves infectivity even as hosts die, ensuring no uninfected pockets survive localized die-offs.
Unpause the game. Because the entire living population is already infected, humanity's cure teams cannot complete research before the death toll reaches 100 percent. Wiping out the world confirms the victory and unlocks Virus mode.

This helped me understand strategy much better.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This guide answered the exact question I had.
