In Plants vs. Zombies™ 2, amphibious plants can be placed directly on dry ground or open water tiles without requiring a Lily Pad. Deploying them directly into water saves 25 sun per tile, frees a seed packet slot during stage selection, and circumvents the cooldown delays of Lily Pads. However, several amphibious plants change their combat roles, targeting coverage, or offensive stats depending on whether they sit on land or float in water.

Terrain Differences by Plant

Amphibious plants offer specific mechanical behaviors depending on where they are rooted.

Guacodile

  • On Land: Operates as a backline ranged shooter, firing avocado pits down its lane at approaching zombies. When an enemy bites it, Guacodile charges forward across the remaining tiles of the lane, damaging every zombie in its path before exiting the board.
  • In Water: Acts as a frontline interceptor. You can deploy it into open water to block diving threats such as Snorkel Zombies. Once contacted or bitten, its charge triggers and seamlessly travels from water onto land tiles. Placing Guacodile too far forward risks wasting its charge on low-threat basic zombies.

Rotobaga

  • On Land: Serves as a mid-column crossfire attacker. Rotobaga hovers rather than rooting into the soil, firing three-projectile bursts along diagonal paths (up-forward, down-forward, up-back, and down-back).
  • In Water: Maintains identical firing behavior while hovering over water. Because it flies, it is completely immune to high-tide and low-tide shifts in worlds like Big Wave Beach. Rotobaga cannot hit zombies traveling straight ahead in its own lane, meaning an isolated Rotobaga in a water lane requires crossfire support from adjacent lanes.

SeaFlora

  • On Land: Acts as a standard straight-lane shooter dealing baseline projectile damage.
  • In Water: Gains combat enhancements, dealing increased projectile damage and piercing multiple targets along its lane when planted directly on water tiles.

GuacodileBackline ranged shooter; emergency lane-clearing rush trigger.Frontline water interceptor; rapid-response anti-diver tripwire.Deals with forward swimmers; charge continues across water-to-land boundaries.
RotobagaDiagonal crossfire attacker; protected middle-column damage dealer.Offshore turret covering adjacent lanes; bypasses surface hazards.Immune to tidal shifts; requires no floating foundation.

Water Stage Strategy and Placement Order

To maximize amphibious units in water-heavy stages:

  1. Drop Lily Pads from your seed selection. If your offensive line relies on amphibious units, remove Lily Pads from your loadout to free a seed slot for extra sun production, crowd control, or instant-use explosives.
  2. Deploy an early forward attacker. Place an early Guacodile or Rotobaga directly into the forward water column. This halts opening aquatic zombies at the stage boundary without spending 125 sun on a row of Lily Pads.
  3. Establish backline sun economy. While your forward amphibious units hold the water lanes, spend early sun reserves on primary producers (such as Sun-shroom or Twin Sunflower) on safe dry tiles.
  4. Cover blind spots with support plants. Amphibious attackers feature standard health pools and cannot absorb heavy sustained damage. Pair forward water units with slowing or freezing effects, and place Rotobagas in adjacent lanes to ensure overlapping crossfire over center dead zones.
