In Pokémon GO, the Master Ball guarantees a 100% catch rate on any encounter. Because replacements are strictly limited and difficult to obtain, you should save this item exclusively for two scenarios: high-CP Galarian Legendary Birds spawned from Daily Adventure Incense, or a verified 100% IV Tier 5 raid boss when you are down to your final Premier Ball.
Primary Master Ball Targets
The table below outlines how to prioritize your Master Ball across common high-value encounters:
| Encounter Type | Flee or Escape Risk | Catch Condition | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-CP Galarian Bird | Extreme (Near-certain flee rate) | Spawns from Daily Adventure Incense | High Priority |
| 100% IV Legendary Raid Boss | High (Limited Premier Balls) | Final Premier Ball remaining | Highest Priority |
| Low-CP Galarian Bird | Extreme (Near-certain flee rate) | Under 1,000 CP | Skip (Use Ultra Ball) |
| Shiny Legendary Raid Boss | None (Guaranteed hit catch) | Premier Ball with Silver Pinap Berry | Never Use |
| Wild Shiny Non-Legendary | Low to Moderate | Golden Razz Berry with Ultra Ball | Never Use |
Daily Adventure Incense: Galarian Legendary Birds
Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres only appear while using your 15-minute Daily Adventure Incense. These wild legendaries combine an exceptionally low base catch rate with a flee rate estimated around 90%. In most encounters, breaking out of a standard Ultra Ball results in the Pokémon immediately fleeing.
Before throwing your Master Ball, check the bird's Combat Power (CP):
- High CP (2,500+ CP or Weather-Boosted): Worth catching with a Master Ball if you plan to use it in Master League PvP or want a guaranteed rare trophy.
- Low CP (Sub-1,000 CP): Contest the catch using a Golden Razz Berry, an Ultra Ball, and a Curved Excellent throw. If it breaks out and flees, the resource loss is minimal compared to consuming your only Master Ball.
Tier 5 Raids: 100% IV Bosses on the Final Premier Ball
A verified 100% individual value (IV) Legendary raid boss is the highest-value backup target for a Master Ball. Bosses like Mewtwo, Kyogre, Rayquaza, and Dialga have significant competitive value in raids and the Master League.
Because raid CP directly correlates to IVs, check the boss's Level 20 (standard) and Level 25 (weather-boosted) maximum CP values before the encounter. If the CP matches a perfect 15/15/15 stat spread:
- Throw Golden Razz Berries and Curved Excellent throws across all your standard Premier Balls.
- Track your remaining ball count carefully.
- Switch to your Master Ball only when you reach your final Premier Ball.
Using the Master Ball earlier in the bonus challenge wastes its utility, as one of your standard Premier Balls might succeed on an earlier throw.
Encounters to Avoid
Do not use your Master Ball on the following encounters:
- Shiny Legendary Raid Bosses: A shiny Legendary caught from a five-star raid is a guaranteed first-hit catch. As long as your throw makes contact and you are not moving fast enough to trigger a speed lock, a standard Premier Ball with a Silver Pinap or Pinap Berry catches it automatically.
- Wild Pseudo-Legendaries and Standard Shinies: Pokémon such as Beldum, Gible, Tyranitar, or wild shiny non-legendaries do not share the extreme flee rates of Galarian Birds. They can be safely caught using repeated Ultra Balls and Golden Razz Berries.
Pre-Throw Checklist
Run through these verification checks before confirming a Master Ball throw:
- Confirm the Pokémon Category: Ensure the target is either an incense-exclusive Galarian legendary or a legendary raid boss.
- Verify Raid CP: If in a raid, confirm the exact CP matches the maximum possible value for that boss. If it is not a 100% IV, preserve the ball.
- Exhaust All Standard Balls: In raids, throw every available Premier Ball before accessing the item menu.
- Accept the Confirmation Prompt: Pokémon GO prompts you to confirm your selection after tapping the Master Ball. Review the target one last time before tapping confirm.
