To catch a high Combat Power (CP) wild Groudon in Pokémon GO, maximize your catch multiplier on every throw using a Golden Razz Berry, an Ultra Ball, and a circle-locked Excellent curveball. Wild Legendary spawns combine an exceptionally low Base Catch Rate with an aggressive flee rate, meaning Groudon can run away after a single failed attempt.

Wild Legendary Catch and Flee Mechanics

Wild Legendary spawns during special events do not behave like standard wild encounters or Raid Bosses. Unlike standard encounters with low flee chances or Raids where the boss stays until you exhaust your Premier Balls, wild Legendaries reroll a high flee probability each time they break out.

Encounter TypeBase Catch Rate (BCR)Typical Base Flee Rate
Standard Wild Spawn20% – 50%5% – 15%
Raid Boss Groudon2%0% (Flees only when balls reach zero)
Wild Legendary Groudon2% – 3%50% – 90%

A high CP wild Groudon—especially one boosted above 2,000 to 2,500 CP in clear or sunny weather—features a higher Pokémon level. Higher levels reduce the base catch probability further. Because of the extreme flee rate, every failed throw carries a severe risk of ending the encounter immediately.

Required Catch Modifiers

To overcome the low base catch rate, apply every available multiplier on each throw:

  • Golden Razz Berry: Applies a 2.5x multiplier. Avoid regular Razz or Pinap Berries, as lower multipliers directly increase the likelihood of a breakout and subsequent flee.
  • Ultra Ball: Provides a 2.0x multiplier over a standard Poké Ball.
  • Curveball Throw: Adds a 1.7x catch modifier. Always spin the ball before throwing.
  • Ground-Type Medals: Having a Platinum Ground medal (Earth Ranger) provides a permanent 1.4x bonus to Ground-type catch formulas.

Stacking these bonuses raises your per-throw success rate to the highest possible non-guaranteed baseline.

How to Set the Circle for Excellent Throws

Landing an Excellent throw adds up to a 2.0x multiplier based on the ring size at contact. Groudon has a large target area, making the circle-lock technique the most reliable way to land consistent Excellent throws.

  1. Select an Ultra Ball and feed Groudon a Golden Razz Berry.
  2. Touch and hold the ball until the target ring shrinks to roughly the size of Groudon's inner faceplate, then release without throwing. The circle size is now locked.
  3. Wait for Groudon to perform its attack animation (a roar or forward lunge).
  4. When the attack is roughly 75% complete, begin spinning your curveball.
  5. Release the ball toward the center of Groudon's chest as the animation finishes.

The ball will connect the moment the attack ends, preventing Groudon from knocking it away while preserving your locked Excellent circle.

When to Use a Master Ball

A Master Ball bypasses both the catch and flee calculations, guaranteeing an immediate capture.

Ball ChoiceStrengthsTrade-offs
Ultra Ball + Golden RazzRepeatable across multiple encountersSubject to breakout and high flee rates
Master BallGuarantees capture instantlyConsumes an extremely limited inventory item

Save your Master Ball for high CP wild Groudon encounters that display near-perfect IV CP values, or when facing the final encounter of an event after multiple targets have fled. If the CP does not indicate exceptional stats, continue using the Golden Razz Berry and Ultra Ball combination.

Handling Consecutive Flees

Losing multiple wild Legendaries in a row is normal given the 50% to 90% flee rate per breakout. Rushing throws out of frustration leads to missed circles and wasted resources.

If several targets flee consecutively, verify your device has a stable GPS signal. Rapid travel or GPS drift can trigger a temporary speed lock, causing any wild Pokémon to flee automatically on the first throw. Once your location stabilizes, reset your pacing and use the circle lock on every throw.
