To get Gengar and Alakazam in Pokémon Quest, you must attract their base forms, Gastly and Abra, by cooking specific dishes at your base camp and then leveling them up to level 36. Neither species requires trading or evolution items; both evolve automatically once they reach their required level thresholds.
Cooking Recipes for Gastly and Abra
To optimize your ingredient usage, cook dishes that specifically target Ghost- and Psychic-type Pokémon rather than relying on generic Mulligan recipes.
- Gastly (Sludge Soup a la Cube): Lures Poison- and Ghost-type Pokémon. Gastly shares this dish pool with Poison types like Grimer, Bulbasaur, and Venonat.
- Option 1: 4 Tiny Mushrooms and 1 Balm Mushroom
- Option 2: 3 Tiny Mushrooms and 2 Big Roots
- Abra (Brain Food a la Cube): Lures Psychic-type Pokémon with a very high encounter rate.
- Standard recipe: 3 Bluk Berries and 2 Apricorns
Always use the highest-tier cooking pot unlocked in your camp. Cooking with a Gold Pot attracts Pokémon at much higher starting levels (often near or above level 70) and with higher base stats, bypassing the low-level training phase entirely.
Evolution Levels
Both lines follow a two-stage evolution process tied exclusively to expedition leveling:
| Base Form | First Evolution | Level Required | Final Evolution | Level Required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gastly | Haunter | Level 25 | Gengar | Level 36 |
| Abra | Kadabra | Level 16 | Alakazam | Level 36 |
If you recruit a Gastly or Abra from a high-tier pot that is already above level 36, it will evolve into its middle stage after gaining one level, and then into its final stage on the subsequent level-up.
Recommended Moves and Move Stones
When recruiting Gastly and Abra, prioritize specimens that have only one move slot with three open Move Stone sockets. Single-move setups allow you to attach three support stones to a single ability, which is more effective than splitting stones across two unlinked moves.
Gengar: Shadow Ball
Gengar performs best as a mid-range attacker using Shadow Ball, an explosive ranged projectile that homes in on targets and deals area-of-effect burst damage on impact. If your Gastly rolls early utility moves like Lick or Confuse Ray, keep them temporarily, but reroll for Shadow Ball via Move Learning once it evolves into Haunter or Gengar.
- Recommended Move Stones: 2 Wait Less Stones (to reduce skill cooldown) and 1 Broadburst Stone (to expand the blast radius).
Alakazam: Psychic
Alakazam operates as a long-range cannon using Psychic. This skill launches homing energy orbs over long distances, inflicts multi-hit damage, and frequently lowers the enemy's defense stat.
- Recommended Move Stones: 1 Whack-Whack Stone (for an extra attack cast) and 2 Wait Less Stones (to maintain continuous fire).
Bingo Bonuses and Power Stone Grids
Bingo bonuses cannot be rerolled through training, so check each recruit's stat grid before investing resources.
- Gengar: Look for bingo bonuses that reduce Ghost-type move wait time, increase Ghost-type move damage, raise critical hit rate, or provide flat Attack increases. In the Power Stone grid, aim for a balanced layout of 5 to 6 Attack Stone slots and 3 to 4 HP Stone slots to ensure Gengar survives stray boss attacks at medium range.
- Alakazam: Prioritize bingo lines that boost Psychic-type attack damage or decrease Psychic-type wait times. Alakazam's base stats skew heavily toward Attack, leaving it fragile. Avoid specimens with only Attack Stone sockets; ensure the grid contains at least 2 or 3 HP Stone slots to prevent Alakazam from being knocked out in a single hit.
Team Synergy and Hit Healing
Because both Gengar and Alakazam have low defensive stats, support them with a dedicated front-line buffer:
- Include a Buffer Tank: Pair them with a durable melee lead like Machamp running Bulk Up equipped with three Sharing Stones. This spreads offensive and defensive buffs to Gengar and Alakazam, mitigating their fragility against boss area attacks.
- Equip Hit Healing: Prioritize the Hit Healing secondary stat on your Attack Stones. Aiming for 2% to 5% Hit Healing allows the high damage output of Shadow Ball and Psychic to instantly restore Gengar and Alakazam to full health when their attacks connect.
