To evolve Magikarp into Gyarados in Pokémon Quest, raise Magikarp to level 20 with its Everstone toggle set to OFF. If your Magikarp was recruited above level 20 from a higher-tier cooking pot, gaining one additional level triggers the evolution immediately.

Everstone Check and Evolution Requirements

Pokémon Quest does not use evolutionary stones or trading mechanics. Evolution depends entirely on leveling thresholds:

  1. Open Magikarp's profile sheet from your Pokémon roster.
  2. Look at the upper-right corner to check the Everstone status.
  3. If the Everstone reads ON, tap it to turn it OFF. When active, the Everstone locks a Pokémon in its base form indefinitely.
  4. Level Magikarp up by at least one level—either through camp training or completing an expedition stage—while the Everstone is deactivated. Magikarp will automatically evolve into Gyarados once it reaches level 20 or higher.

How to Attract Magikarp with Cooking

Magikarp is a Water-type Pokémon recruited primarily by cooking Mouth-Watering Dip a la Cube. This recipe requires at least four soft ingredients and a high proportion of blue ingredients.

Recipe QualityExample IngredientsNotable Water-Type Pool
Normal3 Bluk Berry, 2 Tiny MushroomMagikarp, Psyduck, Poliwag, Tentacool
Good3 Bluk Berry, 1 Apricorn, 1 Icy RockMagikarp, Slowpoke, Seel, Horsea
Special3 Icy Rock, 2 Big RootMagikarp, Lapras, Omanyte, Kabuto

Using higher-tier cooking pots increases the starting level of the recruited Pokémon:

  • Standard Pots: Yield low-level Pokémon that must be leveled up to reach level 20.
  • Gold Pots: Yield Pokémon between levels 70 and 100. A Magikarp from a Gold Pot already meets the level 20 requirement and needs only a single level-up to evolve into Gyarados.

Safest Ways to Level Magikarp

Deploying Magikarp directly into mid- or high-level expedition stages creates combat difficulty because its move pool is severely limited:

  • Splash: Deals zero damage and provides no party buffs.
  • Flail: Deals minor damage that only scales when Magikarp is near zero HP.

To bypass fielding an ineffective party member, use these leveling options:

  • Camp Level-Up Training: Feed unwanted Water-type Pokémon to Magikarp as training partners. Same-type Pokémon grant bonus experience, quickly bridging early levels without expending expedition battery charges.
  • High-Tier Pot Fodder: High-level common Pokémon from Silver or Gold cooking pots provide substantial experience pools when used as training partners.
  • Backline Carry: If training partners are unavailable, place Magikarp in a team alongside a durable buffer (such as Machop using Bulk Up with Sharing Stones) and run low-risk zones like First Steppes on Auto.

Gyarados Build and Move Training

Once Magikarp evolves, Gyarados gains access to high offensive base stats and superior Water-type attacks. Cycle its moves immediately using Move Training at base camp.

  • Waterfall (Primary Damage): Waterfall is Gyarados's strongest direct attack. It strikes enemies multiple times in front of Gyarados, deals high damage, and applies knockback. Support it with Broadburst Stones to widen the area of effect and Wait Less Stones to reduce the cooldown between uses.
  • Dragon Dance (Alternative Self-Buff): Gyarados can learn Dragon Dance to raise its own Attack and Movement Speed. However, because Gyarados cannot equip enough Sharing Stones to buff the entire party as effectively as Machamp or Mewtwo, Waterfall remains the preferred choice.

Move Training Tips

Move Training success rates drop each time a training attempt fails on a specific Pokémon. To keep success rates high, use matching Water-type or Flying-type training partners (such as Golduck, Seaking, or duplicate Gyarados) when rerolling for Waterfall.

Power Stones and Bingo Bonuses

  • Socket Distribution: Aim for a balanced split, such as 6 Attack and 3 HP, or 5 Attack and 4 HP. Pure 9-Attack socket distributions leave Gyarados vulnerable to burst damage from late-game expedition bosses.
  • Hit Healing Substats: Prioritize Power Stones with the Hit Healing substat up to the 10% cap. Because Waterfall hits multiple times per activation, Gyarados recovers large portions of its health bar during sustained combat.
  • Target Bingo Bonuses: Look for Bingos that offer Water-Type Moves Wait Reduction (-5% or -10%) and Water-Type Moves ATK Increase to maximize Waterfall's damage output and frequency.
