To run a competitive Charizard ex deck in Pokémon TCG Pocket, pair Charizard ex with Moltres ex as your lead Energy accelerator. Because the format limits natural Energy generation to one attachment per turn, Charizard ex requires outside support to fuel its four-Energy attack cost. Leading with Moltres ex lets you charge your benched Charmander line early, setting up Charizard ex to sweep the board with its 200-damage Crimson Storm attack.

20-Card Deck List

This 20-card list maximizes setup consistency by running duplicate copies of your primary attackers and key Trainer cards.

Energy Acceleration and Board Setup

Moltres ex serves as the engine of the deck. Its Inferno Dance attack costs a single Fire Energy and flips three coins. For each heads, attach one Fire Energy directly from your Energy Zone to a benched Fire Pokémon.

  • Target the Bench: Direct every Energy attached by Inferno Dance onto your benched Charmander or Charmeleon. Never attach accelerated Energy to Moltres ex itself.
  • Absorb Early Pressure: Moltres ex has 140 HP, allowing it to withstand early attacks from common meta threats like Mewtwo ex and Pikachu ex. Use Potion to heal 20 damage if it buys Moltres ex another turn to attack.
  • Pivot Cleanly: Moltres ex yields two points toward the opponent’s three-point win condition if knocked out. Once your benched attacker holds enough Energy, play X Speed to lower Moltres ex’s retreat cost and swap in your evolved attacker.

Managing Crimson Storm and Energy Discards

Charizard ex deals 200 damage with Crimson Storm, which unconditionally knocks out prominent opposing ex cards in a single blow, including Venusaur ex (160 HP), Mewtwo ex (150 HP), and Articuno ex (140 HP). Charizard ex's 180 HP also allows it to survive most counterattacks.

Crimson Storm costs two Fire Energy and two Colorless Energy, and it discards two Fire Energy each time you attack. Manage your Energy pool using these rules:

  • Overcharge on the Bench: If Inferno Dance coin flips permit, attach five total Energy to your benched Fire Pokémon before evolving. When Crimson Storm discards two Energy, your Charizard ex retains three Energy. This allows you to attack again on the following turn with a single natural Energy attachment.
  • Conserve with Slash: If the opposing Active Pokémon has 60 or fewer HP, use Slash for 60 damage instead. This preserves your Energy attachments and reserves Crimson Storm for high-HP targets.

Turn-by-Turn Execution

Follow this opening sequence to establish your board and transition into an endgame sweep:

  1. Turn One: Place Moltres ex in the Active Spot. Play Poké Ball to find Charmander and bench it. Attach your natural Fire Energy to Moltres ex, and use Inferno Dance if you go second.
  2. Turn Two: Evolve Charmander into Charmeleon to raise its HP to 90. Attack with Inferno Dance again to direct additional Energy onto Charmeleon. Use Professor's Research to draw two cards and find Charizard ex.
  3. Turn Three and Beyond: Evolve into Charizard ex once it has at least four Energy attached. Play X Speed to retreat Moltres ex, move Charizard ex into the Active Spot, and attack with Crimson Storm. Use Sabrina to pull an opponent's high-value target into the Active Spot to seal the win.

Matchup Strategies

  • Against Mewtwo ex and Gardevoir: This matchup is a race to attack. Mewtwo ex requires four Psychic Energy to hit for 150 damage with Psydrive. Charizard ex survives this hit at 180 HP and destroys Mewtwo ex in return. Use Sabrina early to force unevolved Ralts or Kirlia into the Active Spot to slow their Gardevoir engine.
  • Against Water Decks (Starmie ex and Articuno ex): Water Pokémon hit your Fire types for weakness damage, making Starmie ex dangerous to Moltres ex. Leave Charmander on the Bench until you can fully evolve it. Let Moltres ex absorb hits while charging your Bench, then bring forward Charizard ex to knock out Starmie ex (130 HP) or Articuno ex (140 HP) in one attack.
