In Pokémon TCG Pocket, running Magneton on your Bench allows you to bypass the standard rule of attaching only one Energy per turn. Its Volt Charge ability generates an extra Lightning Energy directly onto itself once each turn. When paired with the Supporter card Lt. Surge, you can transfer that banked Energy onto a powerful frontline attacker in a single turn, enabling immediate high-damage strikes without spending multiple turns manually charging in the Active Spot.

How the Magneton and Lt. Surge Combo Works

Under standard game rules, you can only attach one Energy per turn from the Energy Zone. Magneton overrides this limitation by acting as a passive Energy generator on your Bench:

  1. Volt Charge Generation: Once Magnemite evolves into Magneton, activate Volt Charge every turn to pull an extra Lightning Energy onto Magneton. This doubles your board's total Energy generation each turn Magneton remains active on the Bench.
  2. Stockpiling: Keep Magneton safely on the Bench while it gathers two to three Lightning Energy over consecutive turns.
  3. Lt. Surge Transfer: When you are ready to attack, promote your primary attacker to the Active Spot and play Lt. Surge. This Supporter card transfers all Lightning Energy attached to your Benched Magneton directly to your designated Lightning Pokémon.
  4. Immediate Impact: Your active attacker swings immediately with high-cost attacks without having endured vulnerable setup turns in the Active Spot.

Best Attackers for the Magneton Engine

The Magneton engine requires attackers with steep Energy costs or discard penalties that standard attachment rates cannot support efficiently.

AttackerAttack CostDamage & Attack EffectEngine Role
Raichu3 Lightning140 damage (Thunderbolt); discards all attached EnergyPrimary finisher; Magneton reloads Raichu after discard
Zapdos ex3–4 EnergyHigh single-target or multi-hit burst damageBulky carry that survives hits while Magneton charges
Electabuzz2 Lightning40+ damage on coin flip (Thunder Punch)Early-game frontline stall and low-cost backup

Raichu gains the highest value from this setup. Thunderbolt deals 140 damage, which is sufficient to knock out almost any non-ex card in one blow. Normally, the requirement to discard all attached Energy leaves Raichu helpless after attacking. The Magneton battery offsets this drawback by storing reserve Energy on the Bench, letting a subsequent Lt. Surge power up Raichu or a second attacker right away.

Zapdos ex provides higher HP to absorb early opponent pressure while Magneton ramps. Once loaded through Lt. Surge, it applies sustained offensive pressure without risking an early knockout during setup.

Turn-by-Turn Execution

  • Turn 1 (Setup): Bench Magnemite early using Poké Ball and place a resilient Basic Pokémon, such as Electabuzz or Zapdos ex, in the Active Spot. Use your manual turn attachment on your active Pokémon to threaten early chip damage.
  • Turn 2 (Evolution): Evolve Magnemite into Magneton on the Bench. Immediately activate Volt Charge to bank your first bonus Energy. Use drawing cards like Professor's Research to dig for Lt. Surge and your primary attacker.
  • Turn 3 and Beyond (The Surge Swing): Activate Volt Charge again to bring Magneton's Energy pool to two or three. Move your main attacker into the Active Spot, play Lt. Surge to transfer the Energy, and execute your high-cost attack.

Engine Weaknesses and How to Manage Them

While the Magneton engine produces explosive turns, it introduces clear vulnerabilities that require proactive play:

  • Supporter Timing Bottlenecks: The engine cannot deploy banked Energy without Lt. Surge. If Lt. Surge remains stuck near the bottom of your deck, Magneton hoards Energy on the Bench while your Active Pokémon takes damage without support. Run search and draw cards to cycle through your deck aggressively.
  • Active Spot Gusting: Opponents running cards like Sabrina can force a benched Magneton into the Active Spot. Magneton's low HP and Retreat Cost make it an easy target. Always plan your manual Energy attachments so you can retreat Magneton or finish the turn if displaced.
  • Bench Management: Magneton permanently consumes one of your Bench slots to perform its role. Avoid overfilling your remaining Bench spaces with unneeded Basic Pokémon so you always have room to develop your main attacker and a backup pivot.
