To stop losing food to troop upkeep in Puzzles & Survival, let your top-bar open food balance drop to zero and keep all your food stored inside unopened inventory crates.

Troop upkeep automatically drains open food every hour based on the size and tier of your military. However, troops suffer no penalties when your base runs out of food. Units do not starve, desert, weaken, or lose combat effectiveness at zero food. Because unassigned troops fight, defend walls, and join rallies normally without food in the storehouse, feeding them passively wastes resources.

Food Storage and Upkeep Vulnerability

Supplies stored inside your inventory bag or placed into specific alliance structures do not count toward your active base stockpile and cannot be consumed by standing armies.

Storage LocationSubject to Troop Upkeep?Vulnerable to Enemy Raids?
Open Balance (Top Bar)Yes (drained hourly)Yes (lootable if unshielded)
Bagged Crates / ChestsNo (immune to upkeep)No (cannot be scouted or plundered)
Alliance Warehouse DepotNo (immune to upkeep)No (protected within daily limit)

Keeping your open food at zero also protects your Sanctuary from hostile players. Scouts scouting a base with no open resources will find an unprofitable target, reducing the chance of opportunistic attacks during Wasteland warfare.

How to Execute Upgrades Without Losing Food

When preparing for construction, technology research, or troop training, follow this sequence so your army does not consume your supplies before you can spend them:

  1. Secure secondary materials first: Gather or claim all required wood, steel, and gas ahead of time, as troops do not consume industrial materials for upkeep.
  2. Apply progression boosts: Activate construction or research speedups and equip relevant gear to lock in cost and time reductions.
  3. Calculate exact costs: Check the precise amount of food needed for the target project.
  4. Open crates immediately before starting: Open only the exact quantity of food boxes required from your bag until the cost indicator turns green.
  5. Commit the project instantly: Press the upgrade or research button immediately without navigating away from the menu.

Spending the food within seconds of opening crates ensures your military has no window to eat into the opened balance.

Managing World Gathering and Farm Accounts

Because map gathering returns open food directly to your top resource bar where troops immediately consume it, adjust your resource collection strategy:

  • Prioritize industrial tiles on combat accounts: Send your main army to gather wood, steel, and gas tiles on the world map rather than food.
  • Store overflow in the Alliance Warehouse: If you accidentally open food or collect food rewards, deposit your daily allowance into the Alliance Warehouse depot to take it out of your troops' reach.
  • Keep farm armies small: If you run secondary farm accounts to supply your Sanctuary, train only minimal combat units so upkeep remains near zero on those bases.
  • Time resource transports: Keep supply boxes unopened on farm accounts until the moment your main account is ready to start an upgrade, then unpack, transport, and spend the resources immediately.
