Reaching levels 20 through 37 in RAID: Shadow Legends is a critical transition period. This phase marks the shift from the introductory tutorial experience into the core gameplay loop of resource management, team building, and efficient grinding. During this window—typically your second through eighth day of play—the decisions you make regarding energy expenditure and champion development will dictate how quickly you can tackle mid-game content like the Dragon’s Lair and higher Clan Boss tiers.
The "12-3 Brutal" Farming Strategy
The most important objective for any new player in RAID: Shadow Legends is reaching Stage 12 of the Campaign on Brutal difficulty. Specifically, Stage 12-3 (The shields/gear drop) is the gold standard for experience and silver farming.
Why 12-3? It offers the most efficient "Energy-to-Silver" ratio in the early game while providing excellent base XP for your "food" champions. To reach this, you must stop trying to level a full team of five heroes. Instead, focus entirely on your starter champion (Kael, Athel, Elhain, or Galek). Your goal is to get this champion to Level 60 (Rank 6) as quickly as possible. A single Level 60 starter equipped with the Lifesteal set provided by the New Player login rewards can solo-farm Brutal 12-3, allowing you to bring three low-level "food" champions along to rank them up simultaneously.
Strategic Champion Development
Resource scarcity is the biggest hurdle for players at level 20. You will be tempted to level every Rare or Epic champion you summon from shards; resist this urge. In RAID: Shadow Legends, a deep roster of mid-level champions is useless compared to a focused roster of high-level specialists.
The Hierarchy of Investment
- The Carry (Starter): This champion receives all your best gear and skill books first. They are your engine for progression.
- Support/Utility: Once your starter is 6-starred, look for champions that provide "Decrease Defense" (to speed up runs) or "Turn Meter Control."
- The Food: These are Uncommon or common champions you pull from Mystery Shards. Use these exclusively as sacrifice fodder to Rank up your primary team.
Expert Insight: Never use a Rare or Epic champion as "food" until you have confirmed they are not part of a "Fusion" event or considered "Top Tier" for endgame activities. Check the Champion Index to see if they are required for permanent fusions.
Gear Optimization: Beyond the Set Bonuses
New players often fall into the trap of prioritizing "Set Bonuses" (like 4-piece Attack or Life sets) over the actual primary stats of the gear. This is a mistake.
In RAID: Shadow Legends, the primary stat on your boots, chest, and gauntlets matters significantly more than the set bonus. Follow this priority list when equipping your main carry:
- Boots: Always prioritize Speed as the main stat. In this game, taking more turns is always better than having slightly higher Attack.
- Chestplate: Look for Attack % (for damage dealers) or Defense % (for survival). Avoid "Flat" stats (e.g., +40 Attack) as they scale poorly compared to percentage-based stats.
- Gauntlets: Aim for Critical Rate %. Your goal is to get your carry to 85%–100% Critical Rate so that their abilities hit consistently hard.
Upgrade your "Weapon," "Helmet," and "Shield" artifacts to +8 or +12 first. These pieces provide flat stats that drastically increase your base HP and Attack, which provides the biggest immediate boost to survivability in the Campaign.
Managing Energy and Daily Objectives
Your energy bar is your most valuable currency. Between levels 20 and 37, you should never let your energy sit at the maximum cap. If you aren't playing, your energy should be regenerating.
- Daily Missions: Prioritize these above all else. They provide the Gems and Shards needed for further summons and upgrades.
- Clan Boss: Participate in the Clan Boss every single day. Even if your damage output is low, the chest rewards are the primary source of early-game Shards and high-quality gear.
- Energy Refills: Use your energy refills during double-XP events or when you have a long play session planned. Do not stockpile them; the faster you reach level 37, the more energy capacity you gain, which makes your daily regeneration more efficient.
Preparing for the Mid-Game Threshold
As you approach level 37, your focus should shift toward the Dragon's Lair. The gear you farmed in the Campaign is "common" and "uncommon" quality; you will eventually need "Rare" and "Epic" gear with better sub-stats from the Dragon.
By the time you hit level 37, you should have:
- A Level 60 Starter Champion.
- The ability to clear Brutal 12-3 on Auto.
- A core team of at least 3-4 champions who are fully ascended (at least 3-star ascension).
If you are struggling to progress, stop farming gear and return to farming XP. Most walls in RAID: Shadow Legends are not solved by better gear, but by higher champion levels and better "Ascension" tiers. Ascension increases your champion's base stats and unlocks powerful passive abilities that can turn a failing team into a farming machine. Focus on these milestones, and you will find the transition to the mid-game both faster and significantly more rewarding.
