Returning to Kingdom vs. Kingdom (KvK) in Rise of Kingdoms—or preparing for your very first campaign—requires a shift in mindset from "power-focused" to "efficiency-focused." Many players mistakenly believe that high total power is the primary metric for success. In reality, modern Rise of Kingdoms warfare is dictated by trade efficiency, field performance, and the ability to sustain combat over long-duration events.
If you are evaluating whether your account is ready to contribute meaningfully to your alliance's war effort, you must audit your account based on combat sustainability rather than city power.
The Modern Meta: Why Field Efficiency Trumps Total Power
In the current Rise of Kingdoms landscape, total power is often a vanity metric. A player with 80 million power but outdated commanders and poor gear will perform worse on the field than a 40 million power account with a maxed-out meta march.
Your objective in KvK is to maximize your Kill Points (KP) while minimizing your resource and speedup consumption. This is achieved through "positive trades"—killing more enemy troops than you lose in the process. If your account is not built to sustain these trades, you become a liability to your alliance, as you will quickly run out of hospital space and resources, effectively removing you from the fight when your alliance needs you most.
Auditing Your Legendary Commander Roster
The most critical component of your combat readiness is your commander pairings. You should aim to field at least two, and ideally three, fully expertised legendary commanders.
- The Level 60 Baseline: Any commander you intend to bring to the field must be level 60. Anything less results in lower troop capacity and missing talent points, which puts you at a mathematical disadvantage before the fight even begins.
- Expertise vs. Diversity: Do not spread your legendary sculptures across five different commanders. It is significantly better to have one "god-tier" march (e.g., a fully expertised meta commander pair) than five mediocre marches that will get focused down and annihilated in seconds.
- Meta Alignment: Research the current season’s meta. If you are returning from a long break, your old "go-to" commanders may have been power-crept. Prioritize your sculptures into commanders that provide utility, area-of-effect (AoE) damage, or massive single-target debuffs.
Maximizing Equipment and Armaments
Equipment is the single greatest force multiplier in Rise of Kingdoms. Even a slightly inferior commander can perform well with "BiS" (Best-in-Slot) legendary gear, whereas the best commander in the game will fail if their equipment is lacking.
- Set Bonuses: Prioritize completing legendary sets. The stat bonuses from full sets often provide the necessary health and defense to survive "swarming"—the act of multiple enemies targeting your march at once.
- Refining: Do not neglect the refining process. Aim for at least 3-4% stat bonuses on your primary pieces. When fighting in high-density pass battles, these marginal gains often determine whether your march survives a trade or gets wiped.
- Armaments: Your armaments are the final layer of optimization. Look for "hidden" power in your armament rolls, such as increased march speed or extra health stats for your primary unit type.
Assessing Troop Tier and Technology
While Tier 4 (T4) troops have their place in garrison defense or specialized utility, field combat in Rise of Kingdoms is dominated by Tier 5 (T5) units.
- The T5 Threshold: If you are not yet T5, focus your research exclusively on military technology. Prioritize Health and Defense nodes over Attack nodes; in the current meta, tankiness allows you to stay on the field longer, which leads to more consistent KP accumulation.
- Hospital Capacity: Your hospital capacity is your "combat stamina." If your hospital is small, you will be forced to stop fighting frequently to heal. Upgrade your hospitals to their maximum levels and ensure you have the technology researched to increase hospital capacity.
- Medical Speedups: You cannot participate in KvK without a massive stockpile of healing speedups. If you have to wait for your troops to heal naturally, you will miss the major objective windows (like ruins, altars, or pass openings).
Strategic Resource and Speedup Management
Preparation for KvK is as much about logistics as it is about combat. Before the KvK start date, you need to conduct a "resource audit."
- Healing Reserves: Calculate your potential losses. If you have fewer than 100,000–200,000 minutes of healing speedups stored, you are likely under-prepared for a full-scale war.
- Resource Packs: Keep all your resource packs unopened in your item bag. If you are zeroed in an internal conflict or a city rally, your stored resources will be plundered. Only open what you need for immediate research or training.
- The "Trade-Off" Mindset: During the campaign, monitor your battle logs. If you find that your march is taking significantly more damage than it is dealing, pull back. There is no shame in retreating to save your troops. A player who fights intelligently for four hours is more valuable than a player who throws their entire army into a meat grinder in fifteen minutes.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over-extending: Do not push your march deep into enemy territory without alliance support. A single march, no matter how strong, will eventually be swarmed by five enemy marches.
- Ignoring the Map: Pay attention to the "fog of war" and alliance markers. Positioning is everything; holding the high ground or controlling choke points near pass openings is more important than raw power.
- Neglecting Support Roles: If your commanders or gear aren't top-tier, pivot to a support role. Use secondary marches to provide buffs, debuffs, or to act as "bait" to pull enemy marches into your alliance's traps.
By objectively auditing these four areas—Commanders, Equipment, Technology, and Resources—you can determine exactly where your account stands. If you are lacking in one area, adjust your focus immediately. In Rise of Kingdoms, being prepared is half the battle; the rest is simply knowing when to commit your troops and when to live to fight another day.

This helped me understand strategy much better.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
