To beat Swordmaster Katsushika Jinsai at the end of Chapter 5 in Ronin: The Last Samurai, focus on filling his posture bar rather than whittling down his health. Jinsai attacks with rapid multi-hit flurries and long-range lunges that rapidly break a passive guard. Deflect his standard sequences, interrupt his posture recovery with quick light attacks, and execute a timed Counter Flash against his unblockable thrust to stagger him for critical damage.
Boss Attacks and Deflection Timing
Holding guard against Jinsai builds up your posture bar until your guard breaks. Instead, tap guard to deflect each incoming strike.
Learn the rhythm and visual cues for each of Jinsai's primary moves:
- Three-Hit Cross Combo: Jinsai delivers a diagonal downward cut, an immediate upward return slice, and a delayed overhead chop. Deflect the first two strikes with two rapid taps. Pause briefly before tapping deflect on the overhead strike, as tapping early causes your guard window to expire before the blade hits.
- Sheathed Quick-Draw (Iai Slash): Jinsai drops his stance, puts his katana into its scabbard, and dashes forward in a straight line. Do not deflect during his initial crouch. Watch his lead hand, then tap deflect the moment his hand moves and the blade flashes from the scabbard.
- Leaping Downward Strike: Jinsai jumps into the air to close distance from mid-range, plunging his sword into the ground. Deflect right as his descent reaches your character model.
- Spinning Whirlwind Slash: A two-part 360-degree sweep around his body. Tap deflect twice in rapid succession when he begins spinning at close range.
Countering the Red Aura Thrust
Jinsai's most dangerous move is an unblockable thrust that bypasses normal guards and standard deflections. Trying to block or roll backward through this attack results in heavy damage and an immediate posture break. Punish this attack with a Counter Flash:
- Watch the trigger: Jinsai pulls his katana back to shoulder height while a crimson flash and red Kanji appear over him.
- Hold position: Do not attack immediately upon seeing the red visual effect. Wait for Jinsai to launch his forward thrust.
- Time the strike: Press the attack button precisely as the tip of his weapon is about to hit you.
- Capitalize on the stun: A successful Counter Flash interrupts the thrust, inflicts substantial posture damage, and leaves Jinsai temporarily stunned.
Managing Posture and Attack Openings
Jinsai regenerates posture quickly when left alone. Maintain calculated pressure to prevent his posture bar from decaying while preserving your own guard.
| Situation | Recommended Action | Tactical Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral Mid-Range | Step in with 1–2 light attacks | Stops Jinsai's passive posture regeneration |
| Combo End-Lag | Punish with a combat skill or light attack | Takes advantage of his recovery delay |
| High Player Posture | Step back and hold guard for two seconds | Vents your posture meter without yielding full control |
| Boss Posture Broken | Press attack for a Critical Execution | Inflicts massive direct health damage |
After deflecting a complete attack sequence, hit Jinsai with one or two light strikes. Avoid queuing a full three-hit combo, as his recovery speed allows him to counterattack before your final strike lands. If your posture meter enters the red zone, step back just outside his immediate melee reach, hold guard to vent posture rapidly, and re-engage before his meter starts to fall.
Recommended Equipment and Preparation
Set up your build to maximize posture efficiency before entering the Chapter 5 boss arena:
- Weapon Choice: The standard Katana provides a balanced deflection window and fast swing recovery, making it the most forgiving option for Jinsai's attack cadences. The Crescent Blade offers heavier posture damage per hit, but its slower attack windup requires stricter timing during punish windows.
- Gear Attributes: Prioritize equipment bonuses that increase Deflection Posture Damage and reduce Posture Received when guarding. Armor that offers physical slash damage reduction helps prevent fatal damage if you mistime a Quick-Draw deflection.
- Opening Sequence: Ensure your active combat skills are fully charged prior to entering the arena. Activating a skill immediately at the start of the encounter interrupts Jinsai's opening rush and establishes early posture damage.
