To progress through a boss-drop-only challenge in RuneScape, punch and kick accessible entry-level demibosses that allow full damage mitigation through prayer or footwork, use their direct equipment drops to unlock mid-tier combat, and regularly rotate back to resource-heavy bosses whenever your supply of food, runes, or prayer potions runs low.
Phase 1: Unarmed Demibosses and Starter Weapons
Because standard gathering, crafting, and shops are excluded, your initial objective is to acquire basic weapons and armor with zero starting equipment. Target bosses that possess low defensive stats, predictable mechanics, or reliable safe-spots:
- Deranged Archaeologist (Fossil Island): Sidestep the flying explosive book projectiles while kicking him in melee distance. He drops runite limbs and black dragonhide bodies, providing baseline ranged armor.
- Obor and Bryophyta: Enter these lairs using giant keys and mossy keys collected from giants. Both bosses have low defense and drop foundational melee and magic items, including rune full helms, rune battleaxes, and mossy staff components.
- Crazy Archaeologist and Chaos Fanatic (Wilderness): Both encounters feature telegraphed projectile attacks that can be dodged entirely on ground tiles. These fights yield rune crossbows, power amulets, and early prayer potions.
Phase 2: Mitigating Damage Without Armor
Without standard tank armor, taking direct hits from higher-level encounters will quickly deplete your limited supplies. Use two core tactical mechanics to minimize incoming damage:
- Environmental Flinching: Exploit the monster's target-acquisition cooldown. Stand behind a solid corner or obstacle until the enemy loses combat focus and its health bar disappears. Step out, strike once with a high-damage weapon such as a rune 2h sword or rune battleaxe, and immediately step back behind the obstacle before the enemy executes an attack. This allows you to defeat heavy melee encounters, including the Chaos Elemental or the first phase of the Kalphite Queen, without absorbing melee damage.
- Tick-Perfect Prayer Flicking: Activate overhead protection prayers on the exact tick an enemy's combat animation initiates, then toggle the prayer off immediately after. This negates 100% of incoming damage from single-style enemies while preserving finite prayer potion doses.
Phase 3: Farming Combat Sustain
Because standard cooking and potion brewing are off-limits, your route must alternate between gear-focused encounters and supply bosses. If you run out of restorative consumables, you cannot safely push the next combat tier.
| Encounter | Key Sustain Drops | Progression Function |
|---|---|---|
| Barrows Chests | Chaos, Death, and Blood runes | Supplies casting charges for sustained magic combat |
| Giant Mole | Yew logs, raw/noted nests, raw food | Passive secondary bulk supplies |
| Sarachnis | Egg sacs, weapon poison, red spider eggs | Early melee training food and prayer restoratives |
| Crazy Archaeologist | Sharks and prayer potions | High-tier burst healing and combat prayer restoration |
When your banked food and prayer supplies run low, pause forward progression and farm these sustain targets before challenging higher-tier bosses.
Phase 4: Mid-Game Sets and Dagannoth Kings
Once armed with black dragonhide, a rune crossbow, and banked elemental or combat runes, move into mid-game gear hubs:
- Barrows: Use banked runes to cast offensive magic against the melee brothers. Switch to ranged or melee equipment for Ahrim and Karil. Barrows equipment sets—specifically Karil's ranged gear, Ahrim's robes, and Dharok's or Torag's tank armor—provide the defensive thresholds needed for advanced bosses.
- Dagannoth Rex: Lure Rex into the southern water perimeter of the Waterbirth Island dungeon. Once trapped, Rex cannot retaliate against magic attacks. Defeat him with drop-funded magic casts or Iban's Blast to obtain the Berserker Ring and Dragon Axe.
- Dagannoth Prime and Supreme: Defeat the remaining Kings using the ranged and melee equipment obtained from Barrows and wilderness demibosses to round out your combat bonus rings.
Phase 5: High-Tier Progression and Attrition
High-tier bosses such as Zulrah, Vorkath, and God Wars Dungeon generals introduce unavoidable chip damage, venom, and long kill times that strain drop-only supplies:
- Zulrah: Provides high-tier food, magic weapons, and the toxic blowpipe. Because anti-venom potions are inaccessible without dedicated drops, venom must be managed through timed stat-restore rotations or controlled death resets.
- God Wars Dungeon: When challenging General Graardor or Commander Zilyana, eliminate and loot the chamber minions during the fight. Minions consistently drop the food and prayer restores required to maintain stamina inside the room without resetting the kill count.
If rare drop variance stalls your progress on an endgame weapon, immediately fall back to mid-tier encounters like Barrows and Sarachnis to replenish food, runes, and ammunition before your reserves empty.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about early game in a future update?
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
