When playing Saints Row: The Third on maximum difficulty, surviving tight combat encounters—such as the opening bank heist—requires aggressive line-of-sight management and strict target prioritization. Enemies deal high damage and fire with increased accuracy, making open-field combat fatal. Your immediate action in any encounter is to secure solid cover, prioritize foes wielding automatic weapons over melee or pistol units, and force enemy waves into narrow chokepoints.

Target Prioritization and Weapon Selection

On the highest difficulty setting, enemy threat level depends primarily on armament rather than distance. Target foes carrying automatic firearms first to eliminate incoming damage quickly, then eliminate pistol-wielding and melee enemies. When engaging enemies around corners, peek out incrementally to isolate and neutralize one enemy at a time.

Weapon TypePrimary RoleTactical Application
PistolPrecision & Single TargetsAim for headshots against stationary or unaware targets to conserve ammo.
Submachine GunMid-Range SuppressionFire short bursts to suppress groups of enemies without wasting reserve rounds.

To maintain adequate ammunition during early missions, walk over dropped weapons from defeated enemies after clearing immediate threats. Avoid continuous automatic fire, as long reload animations leave you vulnerable during room breaches.

Cover Movement and Health Recovery

Because health recovery is delayed on higher difficulties, remaining behind cover between firing windows is mandatory for survival.

  • Break Line of Sight: If your health drops, retreat fully behind solid cover until the health regeneration indicator stabilizes.
  • Use Peek-and-Shoot Rhythms: Step out of cover only for brief firing bursts, then immediately return to safety to minimize exposure.
  • Perform Sprint-to-Slide Moves: When shifting between cover points, sprint and slide to lower your character's hit profile and reduce damage taken while moving.
  • Relocate Periodically: Avoid staying in a single cover location indefinitely, as enemies will eventually push your position or launch suppressive fire to flank you.

Defending Bottlenecks and Interacting with Objectives

When enemy waves spawn, do not charge forward into open rooms. Hold your ground near a doorway, narrow hallway, or corner to create a bottleneck. Positioning yourself at an angle to incoming entry points forces enemies to walk into your line of fire one by one, eliminating the need to rotate your camera across multiple directions.

Before moving to complete a mission objective or interact with terminals and vehicles, clear all remaining enemies in the room. Attempting an objective interaction while enemies remain active leaves your character locked in an interaction animation, exposing you to unmitigated damage. If an objective must be reached under fire, move to the nearest cover point adjacent to the objective before starting the interaction.
