To succeed in combat throughout the Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker DLC, you must adapt to Zale and Valere's converted circus classes, manage Arty's heat gauge for backline lock-breaking, and counter rapid turn-countdown shifts. Horloge strips away standard base-game routines, requiring active party rotation and rhythm-based attacks to survive.

Preparing for Horloge

You do not need a completed base-game save file to enter Horloge, the miniature clockwork realm ruled by the Watchmaker. However, battle pacing is significantly faster than standard campaign encounters.

Before passing through the expansion portal, prepare your loadout:

  • Equip timing-assist Relics: Horloge introduces unfamiliar weapon animations and attack cadences. Relics that signal timed hits help you master the new input windows quickly.
  • Stock group MP food: The new class kits require frequent skill use to keep pace with enemy timers. Cook recipes that restore MP to multiple allies at once so your rotations do not stall out.

Zale and Valere: Juggler and Acrobat Kits

In Horloge, the two lead Solstice Warriors swap their standard weapons and abilities for circus-themed classes. This changes their damage profiles, Live Mana generation, and lock-targeting capabilities.

Playing Zale as the Juggler

Zale trades the single-target burst of the Sunblade for rhythmic projectile juggling.

  • Sustained input prompts allow Zale’s projectiles to bounce across multiple enemies in a single action.
  • Hitting sequential rhythm prompts breaks multiple lock weaknesses without spending boosted Live Mana.
  • Because the Juggler class deals lower raw burst damage, use Zale primarily to strip locks and generate Live Mana before bringing in heavy finishers.

Playing Valere as the Acrobat

Valere’s Acrobat kit abandons shield-heavy defense for high-mobility offense and battlefield control.

  • Her blunt-impact attacks gain bonus damage when chained immediately after an ally's turn or following successful projectile deflections.
  • Acrobat vaulting skills can target charging enemies located at the rear of enemy formations, canceling dangerous spells before their counters expire.

Integrating Arty the Artificer

The expansion introduces Arty, a mechanical engineer who serves as a dedicated ranged specialist. Arty operates under unique mechanics that differ from standard party members:

  • Line-of-Sight Bypass: Arty’s clockwork laser firearm directly targets enemy locks on the backline, ignoring frontline bodyguards that normally absorb physical attacks.
  • Overheat Management: Arty uses an internal heat gauge rather than standard MP. Using high-output gadgets builds heat; allow cooldown turns between volleys so Arty does not overheat during critical boss break phases.
  • Live Mana Generation: Deploying Arty’s turrets and homing missiles drops extra Live Mana on the field. This mana directly fuels boosted attacks for Zale and Valere.

Use Arty as a rotational anchor. Swap Arty into active combat to clear difficult elemental or ranged locks, generate Live Mana, and swap back to Zale or Valere to deliver boosted combo attacks.

Countering Clockwork Locks and Shifting Timers

Horloge alters lock-breaking priorities with new encounter mechanics:

  1. Prioritize Clock-Rune Locks: Certain enemy shields feature ticking clock runes. If an action timer expires while a clock rune remains unbroken, the enemy unleashes an immediate counterattack that bypasses normal guard mitigation.
  2. Track Overhead Gear Icons: Elite clockwork constructs feature gear icons above their health bars. When these gears align, the construct’s turn counter can drop by two ticks at once.
  3. Save Delay Skills for Alignments: Because enemy turns can accelerate unexpectedly, do not hoard Boost charges for distant turns. Use Delay abilities and stun skills the moment an enemy's turn counter drops.

Traversing Clockwork Dungeons

Horloge replaces basic push-block obstacles with traversal challenges tied to rhythm and class mechanics:

  • Time Traversal to the Beat: Moving platforms, pendulum blades, and magnetic grapples move in sync with background music cues. Watch and listen to the tempo before crossing hazards.
  • Use Class Skills on the Environment: Fire Zale’s juggling projectiles to trigger distant switches across gaps, and use Valere’s acrobatics to leap across retracting platforms to activate shortcut elevators.
  • Check Side Paths for Gear Chests: Detour down branching paths to find hidden gear chests. These contain unique accessories designed to accelerate combo meter build-up and protect against Horloge-specific status effects.
