To clear Nightmare Mode with Arya in Shadow of the Depth, you must preserve your stamina to maintain dash invulnerability frames (iframes), target rear critical strikes, and prioritize defensive sustain over pure offense. Because Nightmare difficulty boosts enemy health, attack speed, and damage multipliers, Arya's lower health pool leaves her vulnerable to elimination in two to three hits.
Stamina Management and Dash Discipline
Arya depends entirely on stamina to avoid damage. Her dash grants invulnerability frames that pass through enemy cleaves and projectiles, but depleting your stamina leaves her unable to escape follow-up hits.
| Combat Action | Stamina Impact | Execution Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Dagger Combo | Low to moderate | Stop the attack string if a target turns toward you. |
| Defensive Dash | Fixed cost per activation | Reserve at least one charge purely for emergency evasions. |
| Skill or Heavy Burst | High commitment | Commit only when an enemy is staggered or locked in an animation. |
| Kiting and Repositioning | Passive regeneration | Circle at mid-range to let stamina recover before re-engaging. |
Attack in short sequences: land two to three strikes from behind an enemy, dash cancel if adjacent foes begin an attack windup, and disengage to restore your stamina pool.
Relic and Upgrade Priorities
Because encounters last significantly longer on Nightmare Mode, incidental chip damage will drain your health across multi-room descents. Choose rewards that balance survivability and critical scaling:
- Sustain and Shields (Highest Priority): Select relics that grant lifesteal on hit, percentage-based health recovery upon clearing rooms, or barrier shields when casting skills. These passives offset mistakes before reaching floor recovery shrines.
- Damage over Time (Bleed and Poison): Status ailments continue to deplete elite health bars while you kite and wait for stamina regeneration.
- Critical and Backstab Multipliers: Invest in critical strike chance, backstab damage, and attack speed only after establishing your baseline defensive sustain.
Room Navigation and Elite Target Order
Do not run into the center of a newly opened chamber. Identify traps, floor spikes, and choke points around the edges, then clear hostiles in a strict sequence:
- Eliminate Ranged Units: Circle the perimeter immediately to take out archers and spellcasters. Leaving them alive allows off-screen tracking shots to interrupt your melee strings.
- Separate the Pack: Use Arya's movement speed to drag fast pursuers away from armored bruisers.
- Punish Heavy Elites: Avoid attacking armored or shielded elites from the front due to their stagger resistance. Bait their swing, dash through their model to reach their back, execute a brief critical combo, and disengage before their recovery swipe.
Boss Fight Strategy
Bosses on Nightmare difficulty feature shorter attack telegraphs, broader hitboxes, and extended phases. Rushing down a boss leads to rapid deaths.
Wait for the boss to commit to a committed action, such as a channeled spell, leap, or forward slam. Dash behind the boss during the startup animation to exploit the recovery window with your highest-damage skills. As soon as the boss finishes its recovery animation, retreat to reset your positioning and regenerate stamina. If you miss a damage opening, do not force an attack; maintain your distance and wait for the next telegraphed animation.

This saved me time in the early game.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Shadow of the Depth articles next.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
