To use Assassin's revamped first skill, Dark Blade, in Soul Knight, activate the skill to dash through low-health targets and secure an immediate kill. Eliminating an enemy during or right at the end of the dash resets the cooldown instantly, allowing you to chain up to four consecutive invulnerable dashes before the skill enters its full cooldown.
Revamped Dark Blade Mechanics
When activated, Assassin dashes forward at high speed while gaining complete invulnerability to enemy bullets, contact damage, and explosions. At the end of the rush or upon contact, Assassin delivers an empowered melee slash.
The revamp improves two key aspects of the skill:
- Input Responsiveness: The post-dash recovery window is shortened, reducing the delay that previously left Assassin open to projectile spreads after finishing a slash.
- Expanded Hitbox: The finishing slash covers a wider radius around the character, making it easier to trigger resets and clear nearby bullets when combined with melee deflection perks.
Dark Blade resets its cooldown immediately if the dash or its slash eliminates an enemy. You can chain this reset up to an internal limit of four consecutive executions. If an execution fails to kill the target or you reach the chain limit, the skill goes on its standard cooldown.
How to Chain Resets in Swarm Rooms
Sustaining a full reset chain requires selecting targets by health pool rather than charging into the center of the room. Initiating a dash against a healthy elite enemy will fail to kill it, leaving Assassin stranded without cooldown charges.
Follow this sequence to clear swarm rooms safely:
- Target Low-Health Enemies First: Locate basic enemies near the perimeter, such as standard goblins, skeletons, or small gunners.
- Dash for the Kill: Trigger Dark Blade to dash through the weak target. The fatal blow instantly refreshes the skill.
- Continue the Chain: Use the refreshed charge to hit another low-tier enemy or to strike weakened minions surrounding an elite.
- Disengage on the Final Charge: Use your fourth dash to retreat behind solid cover, such as walls or unbreakable pillars, before the standard cooldown begins.
| Skill State | Action | Objective |
|---|---|---|
| First Cast | Dash through a weak minion | Secure the first cooldown reset safely |
| Middle Casts (2–4) | Slash flanking minions or pre-damaged targets | Clear room threats and weaken elite shields |
| Final Cast | Dash toward structural cover | Reposition before the standard cooldown starts |
| On Cooldown | Fire a ranged weapon from behind cover | Stay protected until the skill recovers |
Boss Fight Strategy
Single bosses do not allow continuous reset chaining because their large health pools cannot be executed in one strike.
Against isolated bosses, use Dark Blade as a defensive evasion tool:
- Dodge Screen-Wide Attacks: When a boss fills the room with dense bullet hell patterns or sweeping laser beams, dash directly through the hazard using your invulnerability frames.
- Flank and Fire: Exit the dash behind or to the side of the boss, switch to your ranged weapon, and deal burst damage while the boss finishes its attack animation.
- Capitalize on Minion Spawns: When bosses like Skeleton King or Devil's Snare summon adds, dash through the minions to trigger skill resets. Use the refreshed charges to land guaranteed critical hits on the boss before falling back to cover.
Synergistic Buffs and Weapons
Because the finishing strike of Dark Blade counts as a melee attack, it directly benefits from melee-focused dungeon perks.
Recommended Buffs
- Melee Weapons Can Bounce Bullets: Enables Dark Blade's slash to reflect incoming projectiles, protecting you as the dash completes.
- Increase Melee Attack Distance: Expands the slash hitbox, making execution kills and resets more consistent.
- Reduce Skill Cooldown: Shortens the downtime after your chain ends.
- No Extra Damage when Shield Is Broken: Prevents lethal spillover damage in Badass mode if an execution fails next to an elite.
Weapon Loadout
Equip one fast melee weapon (such as Meat, Rapier, or Blood Blade) to swat incoming projectiles while waiting for Dark Blade's cooldown to recharge. In your other slot, carry a high-damage ranged weapon (such as a high-tier shotgun, bow, or railgun) to soften elite enemies into one-shot execution range before starting your dash chain.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Blindly Spamming the Skill: Tapping the skill button without lining up a path can send Assassin directly into floor hazards like poison or lava, or stop you inside an elite enemy's melee strike.
- Dashing into Full-Health Elites: Champion and elite mobs possess high health and armor. Dashing into them without prior weapon damage will fail to trigger the reset, ending your invulnerability and leaving you adjacent to dangerous foes. Soften heavy targets with gunfire before using Dark Blade to finish them.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This guide answered the exact question I had.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
