Losing to Darth Sion while controlling Atton Rand in Star Wars™: KOTOR II does not trigger a game over or reload screen. In content restored by The Sith Lords Restored Content Modification (TSLRCM), Darth Sion overpowers and captures Atton if his health drops to zero during their duel in the Trayus Academy corridors.
After Meetra Surik defeats Darth Sion and Darth Traya, Atton is discovered mortally wounded near the Trayus Core, leading to a permanent death scene with dialogue determined by your character's gender, alignment, and influence.
Trayus Academy Duel Outcomes
The one-on-one duel occurs on Malachor V when control shifts from the Exile to Atton inside the Trayus Academy. Your combat performance dictates whether Atton survives the mission.
| Outcome | Immediate Result | Trayus Core Aftermath | Campaign Ending Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atton Defeats Sion | Sion retreats; Atton remains unharmed | Atton regroups with the Exile after Darth Traya falls | Escapes Malachor V aboard the Ebon Hawk |
| Atton Loses to Sion | Sion knocks Atton out and drags him away for torture | Atton is found dying among the debris | Dies in the Exile's arms; permanently lost |
If Atton wins, he avoids capture and survives to appear in the final escape sequence. If Atton falls in battle, the game cuts directly to a scene where Sion taunts Atton and states that breaking him will hurt the Exile. Sion then drags Atton deeper into the academy.
Atton's Death Scene Dialogue Variations
If Atton is defeated, the Exile encounters him collapsed near the Trayus Core following the final duel with Darth Traya. The conversation branches based on previous campaign decisions:
- Romanced Female Exile: For a female protagonist who built high influence with Atton, the scene concludes his romantic arc. Atton confesses his feelings, states that knowing the Exile gave him a reason to live beyond his past as a Sith assassin, and asks to be held as he dies.
- Male or Unromanced Female Exile: The dialogue centers on mutual redemption and his mercenary background. Atton reflects on his luck running out and states that falling in battle alongside a Jedi was preferable to dying in an alley on Nar Shaddaa.
The tone of his final moments also depends on Meetra Surik's moral alignment:
- Light Side Responses: The Exile can provide comfort, validate his redemption from a Sith assassin to a Jedi Sentinel, and help him pass peacefully through the Force.
- Dark Side Responses: The Exile can mock his weakness, ridicule his failure against Sion, or discard his loyalty, leaving Atton to die in despair.
How to Trigger Your Desired Outcome
Because both paths produce complete narrative sequences, you can adjust Atton's setup prior to the Trayus Academy sequence depending on which scene you want to see.
To Keep Atton Alive
- Train Atton as a Jedi Sentinel prior to arriving on Malachor V.
- Equip him with Master Speed, personal energy shields, and upgraded dual lightsabers or modified heavy blasters.
- Activate shields and use hit-and-run tactics along the academy hallway to deplete Sion's health while avoiding full melee attack chains.
To View the Death Scene
- Unequip Atton's armor, weapons, energy shields, and restorative items before entering the Trayus Academy duel trigger.
- Allow Darth Sion to attack without retaliating.
- Let Atton's health bar deplete entirely to start the capture cinematic.
