For a forgiving first playthrough in Star Wars™: KOTOR, start as a Soldier and transition into a Jedi Guardian on Dantooine for high vitality, full feat progression, and reliable melee accuracy. If you prefer offensive Force powers without fragile defenses, start as a Scout and transition into a Jedi Consular for balanced saving throws, free Implant feats, and stronger Force power Difficulty Class (DC) checks.

Starting Attribute Spreads

AttributeSoldier / GuardianScout / ConsularRole in the Build
Strength14–1610Boosts melee accuracy and damage per hit
Dexterity12–1414Improves Defense rating and Reflex saves
Constitution1412–14Adds bonus vitality per level
Intelligence8–1010Governs skill points; companions can cover terminals and doors
Wisdom1215Increases Force points, Will saves, and Force power DC
Charisma10–1214Supports dialogue checks, Force DC, and opposing-alignment power costs

Character creation uses a point-buy system that penalizes extreme single-stat investment:

  • Ranks 8 to 14: 1 attribute point per rank.
  • Ranks 15 to 16: 2 attribute points per rank.
  • Ranks 17 to 18: 3 attribute points per rank.

Stop at 14 or 16 in your primary stats at creation so you do not drain points needed for your defenses. Attribute modifiers only increase on even numbers (for example, 14 and 15 both grant a +2 modifier, while 16 grants +3). Because you gain 1 attribute point at levels 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20, only start with an odd score like 15 Wisdom if you plan to raise it to an even threshold through level-up points or stat-boosting belts and headgear.

Soldier into Jedi Guardian (Melee Build)

Because Star Wars™: KOTOR uses a d20 combat system, early melee swings frequently miss without attack bonuses. The Soldier class counters this by granting a +1 base attack bonus at every level alongside high base vitality and feat allocation.

Once you finish Taris and become a Jedi Guardian on Dantooine, you unlock Force Jump. This class ability automatically leaps across the battlefield to strike distant enemies whenever you open combat with a standard attack. Pair it with self-buffing Force powers that enhance close-range combat:

  • Burst of Speed (upgraded to Master Speed for two extra attacks per round)
  • Energy Resistance
  • Cure

Scout into Jedi Consular (Force Caster Build)

Starting as a Scout gives you balanced Fortitude, Reflex, and Will saving throws plus free Implant feats, avoiding the lower durability of a Scoundrel start. Becoming a Jedi Consular on Dantooine grants the Force Focus feat line, which raises your Force power DC so bosses and Sith troopers are less likely to resist your abilities.

Prioritize crowd control and defensive buffs so your companions can clean up disabled groups:

  • Stun, Stasis Field, and Force Whirlwind to disable enemies
  • Force Wave to knock down and damage whole rooms
  • Master Speed and Force Armor to stay mobile and protected while casting

Weapon Styles and Active Combat Feats

Equipping two weapons without the proper feats applies a -6 attack penalty to your main hand and a -10 penalty to your off hand. Instead of mixing weapon styles or active attack chains, commit to one path from each category:

  1. Choose Dueling or Two-Weapon Fighting: Pick Dueling for single-weapon builds or Consular casters; it requires fewer feats and grants +1 Attack and +1 Defense at rank 1, up to +3 Attack and +3 Defense at Master Dueling. Pick Two-Weapon Fighting for dual-wielding or a Double-Bladed Lightsaber; invest in all three ranks (Two-Weapon Fighting, Advanced, and Master) to reduce the dual-wielding penalty to -1/-1, and use a weapon with the "Balanced" property in your off hand until you reach Master rank.
  2. Level One Active Combat Feat Chain: Choose either Flurry (adds an extra attack per round) or Power Attack (adds flat bonus damage) and upgrade it to Master. Critical Strike focuses on stunning targets, but spreading feat points across multiple active chains weakens your build.

Should You Hold Levels on Taris?

Do not hold back your level-ups on Taris during a first playthrough. Although the total level cap is 20—meaning stopping at level 4 or 5 on Taris banks 15 or 16 Jedi levels for extra Force points and powers—doing so makes the Vulkar Base, the rancor pit, and the Bendak Starkiller duel arena much harder without heavy grenade and energy shield use. Level normally to 7 or 8 on Taris; the remaining 12 to 13 Jedi levels are sufficient to beat the late-game bosses.
