In a Summoners War Stack Ban Best-of-5 (BO5) tournament match, any monster banned during a game remains locked out for both players for the remainder of the series. To succeed, you must manage your monster box across all five potential games rather than committing your strongest core units in Game 1.

How the Stack Ban Format Works

Unlike standard World Arena rules where bans reset after each match, the Stack Ban format enforces cumulative restrictions:

  • Each player bans a monster during the draft phase of each game.
  • Every banned monster stays unavailable to both sides for all remaining games in the BO5 set.
  • A full five-game series removes up to eight to ten key monsters from the collective pool.

Because every ban applies mutually and permanently for the rest of the set, drafting requires evaluating whether eliminating a threat hurts your opponent more than losing that same unit hurts your own future drafts.

Pacing Monster Archetypes Across the Series

Exhausting top-tier turn-one contested picks or primary sustain engines early leaves your drafts vulnerable in later rounds. Group your roster into functional tiers and spread them across the match stages.

Match StageStrategic FocusTarget Monster Archetypes
Game 1Establish baseline pressure without expending core bansMid-range bruisers, flexible element picks, secondary strippers
Games 2–3Dismantle the opponent's primary playstyleSpecialized crowd control, turn-cutters, direct passive counters
Games 4–5Capitalize on depleted pools and enforce depth checksStandalone anchors, secondary immunity units, niche damage dealers

Categorizing Role Redundancy

To prevent an opponent's bans from locking you out of a critical game mechanic, prepare backup units within each core functional role:

  • Strip and Control: Group strippers across tiers (such as Chiwu, Moore, Triton, and Clara) so that early bans do not leave you without buff removal.
  • Immunity and Cleanse: Avoid relying solely on premier picks like Woosa or Velajuel. Rune secondary cleansers and immunity providers, such as Riley, Fedora, or Delphoi, to retain defensive coverage.
  • Attack Bar Manipulation: Maintain multiple booster options. If units like Eshir, Frigate, or Kabilla are picked or banned, rely on secondary turn-manipulators like Adriana to maintain turn cycling.
  • Neutral Bruisers: Retain versatile threats that offer both survivability and damage—such as Dominic, Chandra, and Sagar—for games where primary hyper-carries have been eliminated.

Offensive Denial vs. Defensive Bans

Every ban decision carries immediate and multi-game consequences. Evaluate each ban through two tactical lenses:

1. Strategic Denial Bans

Target key counter-picks early if your opponent lacks lateral substitutes. For example, if your draft plan relies on speed-scaling compositions, an early ban on Leo removes that counter for the entire series. Similarly, removing a signature pivot like Douglas permanently frees up non-water control options in subsequent rounds.

2. Defensive and Sacrificial Bans

When an opponent drafts an immediate high-threat monster, evaluate whether you can neutralize it inside the match through elemental typing, rune efficiency, or in-game focus targeting. If you can handle the unit without banning it, avoid burning a stack ban on a monster you intended to draft in later games.

Executing the Endgame Draft in Games 4 and 5

By the fourth and fifth games, high-priority meta units will largely be eliminated from contention. Deciding games are determined by remaining roster depth and spotting intact synergies:

  1. Audit the remaining pool: Before locking your first pick, review all remaining unbanned units to verify which synergies are completely intact.
  2. Identify unbroken engines: Look for lingering packages that have escaped bans, such as defense-scaling compositions, heavy sustain cores, or single-target snipe setups.
  3. Exploit elemental imbalances: Force your opponent into awkward elemental drafting by picking the last viable neutral threats and locking in the final functional composition engine available.
