To survive combat encounters in Tearscape, preserve a dedicated buffer of stamina for defensive dodges and pull hostiles back into previously cleared rooms before committing to an attack. Aggressive button-mashing will quickly deplete your energy bar and leave you open to fatal counter-attacks.

Stamina Management and Attack Windows

Every primary combat movement in Tearscape—including swinging your weapon, blocking, and dodging—consumes stamina. If you completely deplete the stamina bar, your character cannot execute a dodge roll to evade incoming damage.

To avoid getting trapped without energy:

  • Avoid full combos on active foes: Only execute complete attack strings when an enemy is clearly stunned or stuck in a recovery animation.
  • Keep an escape reserve: Stop attacking while you still have enough stamina to execute at least one dodge roll away from an opponent.
  • Use short engagements: Deal damage in quick bursts, then immediately back away to let your stamina meter regenerate.

Reading Enemy Telegraphs and Spacing

Enemies punish unstudied aggression with chained attacks that inflict heavy damage. Before attempting to deal damage, stay just outside the enemy's strike range and observe their animations to identify safe attack windows.

  • Wind-up animations: Watch the enemy's initial stance change to determine whether an incoming strike is a wide horizontal sweep or a direct thrust.
  • Recovery windows: Count how long an enemy remains stationary after missing a heavy swing. This duration defines your safe window to counter-attack.
  • Weapon range: Stand slightly outside the maximum reach of the enemy's weapon to bait out an attack without taking damage or burning stamina to block.

The monochromatic visual style of Tearscape frequently obscures hostiles placed off-screen or behind terrain obstacles. Rushing into unexplored rooms often triggers multiple ambushes at once.

When entering new areas, probe the edges of the room rather than running through the center. If an enemy detects you, retreat into an area you have already cleared. Fighting in cleared space keeps you from getting cornered and prevents secondary hostiles from joining the skirmish.

Because healing items and consumables are limited, rely on spacing and dodge rolls to avoid taking damage during regular exploration. Save consumable healing resources for boss battles and high-risk encounters where taking damage is difficult to avoid.
